Around the 1600s a movement began in the churches of England, people wanted to rebuild a church founded on the ideals of John Calvin. They came to be known as puritans, the picture above is drawing of what they looked like. The Puritans disliked and wanted to get rid of any Catholic "residue". So, when Charles II dissolved parliament and the relationship between church and state, religious persecution began (and was aimed at the Puritans for not supporting the Anglican church. This led the Puritans to leave for the new world where they could practice their religion freely.

Witch Trails

The witch trials began with a group of teen girls began displaying some unusual behavior. The girls were exclaimed by a doctor and when the doctor said there was nothing wrong with them the girls were accused of witchcraft. The girls then said it was the fault of a woman named Tituba (as she was known for practicing voodoo and taught the girls some). Even after this, the girl continued to accuse others of being witches, contouring their bodies and acting possed when the said accused person was placed in front of them. In the end, 200 people were accused and jailed for “practicing witchcraft” and this image perfectly depicts how innocent women were murdered under false accusation .

This image summarizes what the crucible was about. The Crucible was a play made by Auther Miller, a man who at the time had been blacklisted for not refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Community. He went on to make was now seen as one of the greatest plays in history: The Crucible. The play was made to make a point one the current event playing out (related to the persecution of communists) by bringing up the Salem witch trials and the awful witch hunt that took place. The play followed the hysteria of the town and its people as trials and executions began.

Calvinism/Puritan theological beliefs

The Puritans had a lot of theological beliefs and practices they followed, the image above perfectly showcases some of them. Such as Total Depravity, the belief that all humankind was born with sin, because of Adams and Eves's original sin. Predestination was another primary belief that claimed that there are people who are elected to go to heaven as one of god’s chosen ones, while others aren't and there is no way to change it. Another popular belief was grace, which is when God bestows his presence on a person causing an intense emotional response, and causing that person to be reborn. They believed that one day they would build a utopian city, one built in God's ideals and a strong work ethic.

Causes of witchcraft hysteria

The picture above depicts some of the hysteria and fear the trails caused for the townsfolk. There were many reasons for the hysteria, one being the strong and mass belief that Satan was real and constantly causing misfortunes such as disease, natural disasters, etc. They also believed that Satan was constantly recruiting witches and wizards to do his bidding. They also believed that those who were not “normal” to a certain extent were witches. Old feuds and grudges with others also lead to anxiety that they would be accused of witch crafts as an act of revenge. So, everyone was scared and supposition of each other because they feared witches' presence or being accused of witchcraft.
