Pastoral care means taking care of yourself too

I asked the Pastoral Care Unit officer at Mount Alvernia Hospital (whom I was assigned to) if she thought the hospital was a sad place. She replied (paraphrased) that it's not a sad place, but rather a place of healing, a place of hope. Even though its often not seen as a nice place to be (for patients), its a place for many to look inwards, thus a place of encounter. It's a place of reconciliation and forgiveness when one realizes their end time.

I notice parallels in the way in which we go about our work in NLS, especially in the pastoral aspects of listening, counselling and offering hope. As NLS educators, we sometimes have to work with our students through their personal circumstances, be it their parents' pending divorce or incarceration, students getting into vices with social consequences, their lack of immediate basic needs when parents suddenly lose their income etc. If we could, I'm certain we all want to help them take away their problems or change their situation, but often that is beyond us. At times, the best we can do is help them reframe, encourage them, care by offering them ways to think positively or express gratitude, while we listen and counsel them. Our work in NLS is often pastoral in nature. While we try to help them, sometimes we too can be emotionally drained. We have to also take care of ourselves so that we can give our students our full presence, time and attention when they need it.

Just as the Pastoral carers at MAH PCU are blessed to journey with their patients to provide them hope and comfort, likewise we at NLS are blessed to provide hope and holistic care for our students.

SPED schools have clear outcomes to prepare students for supported or sheltered employment, focusing on skills such as literacy, numeracy, communication, motor, and social skills. Job coaches, alongside teachers and parents, start developing these skills two to three years before graduation to ensure students are ready early. We often hear concerns about students lacking resilience for IEP. Perhaps the key lies in clearly identifying the necessary skills and competencies and preparing students more strategically for employment.

Our school has various references for the roles and expectations of students, staff, parents, and partners, such as SHINE, SERVE, SMILE, SHARE, ABC expectations, 123 expectations, and NLS teacher traits. However, this abundance can be challenging to remember and interpret. We could consider consolidating the key ideas into a single, visually clear representation aligned with the school mission. This would reinforce the shared purpose and alignment among all stakeholders.

I noticed that one effective practice HQ departments implement is conducting immediate debriefs after workshops. The entire team stays back after the participants leave to discuss program gaps and propose solutions. As the 2IC of the Spelling Bee, I could potentially initiate a similar timely After-Action Review (AAR) directly after each round of the competition.

We can explore incorporating creative design thinking in the discussion with the students. It may be a daunting step to implement the whole process but can explore the relevant steps initially.

The process of creating ideas without any boundaries initially and then narrowing them further which are relevant and feasible at the last step will enrich our students in realising that they can be creative and do not involve any complicated steps.

At an innovative place like 3M, we learnt about their practice where they allowed staff to allocate up to 15% of their time to work on something that is not related to their current job/ role. This was how they managed to develop so many IPs and profitable product applications. I think maybe we’ve achieved that in NLS with SWEe. Perhaps next year it can be actively promoted that SWEe does not have to be remotely related to your own area of work.

Fun fact: the thousands of heavy glass panels that made up the external roof covering of the Greenhouse at Jewel Changi as well as the Esplanade were stuck on their s/steel frames with 3M tapes!

Our SWEE this year brought us to 3 external organisations which impacts the lives of our students. WE saw the benefits accrued from OBS visit as we understood how they went about instilling resilience in our students ans how this trait is of such importance to our students' IEP in Year 4 as well as keeping them on track with their academic pursuit. For ITE, it was about looking at potential courses that our students can pursue outside of their current VE strand and how we can prep them towards that journey (a future new ISC in NLS instructing students in sports fitness and magt). RP was an eye opener as their Design for Living was very much a process on how to prep our students for living - very detailed and structured. Something that we can leverage on and also conversely place our staff there to acquire new learnings.
