Dazzle Ship was a co-commission by 1418 NOW WW1 Centenary Art Commission, Liverpool Biennial and Tate Liverpool, in partnership with the Maritime Museum. Renowned artist Carlos Cruz-Diez worked with the idea of dazzle using the historic Edmund Gardner pilot ship owned and conserved by the Maritime Museum. The work was realised by painters from Cammell Laird.

Although this ship is no longer on display at the docks, the website features lots of useful information on dazzle ships including archive images of historical dazzle ships.

Dazzle Ships

Dazzle ships were a type of camouflage used by the British Navy during World War I. Instead of trying to hide the ships, they were painted with bold, geometric patterns in black, white, and other colors. These patterns, called "dazzle," made it hard for enemy submarines to judge the ship's speed, direction, and distance, making it difficult to aim torpedoes accurately. The designs were inspired by abstract art and often included zigzags, stripes, and swirls, creating optical illusions. While they didn't make the ships invisible, dazzle camouflage helped protect them from enemy attacks by confusing the viewer.

One of the Mersey Ferries, Snowdrop, is currently decorated using dazzle patterns.

Pupils could use measuring and their shape knowledge to create their own dazzle ship designs.

Penrose Triangle

The Penrose triangle, also known as the "impossible triangle," is an optical illusion popularised by mathematician Roger Penrose who spent a significant amount of his early career at the University of Liverpool.

This shape appears to be a solid, three-dimensional object, but it cannot exist in reality. When drawn, it looks like a continuous loop of three beams meeting at right angles, but if you try to build it, the structure becomes impossible due to conflicting perspectives. The Penrose triangle challenges our perception of geometry and has become a popular symbol in art and design.

A set of photos from around Liverpool for pupils to explore. What maths can they find in these photos? What word problems could you write about these photos? What information would you need to be able to answer these questions?

Can the children take photos around the local area or around school and talk about how maths features in the photos?

EYFS: Provide the children with simple shapes and ask them to recreate iconic Liverpool buildings like the Liver Buildings or St George's Hall.

KS2/3: Can pupils use isometric paper and measuring materials (compass, ruler, protractor etc) to create technical drawings of Liverpool landmarks? What maths skills do they use as part of these technical drawings?

Give students access to local train/bus/ferry timetables and ask them to calculate how long a journey takes, or how long it would be between different ferry times. Older students can calculate total journey times for round trips.

Provide pupils with maps and ask them to plan a journey to particular Liverpool landmarks or venues.

Show students images of a section of Anfield or Goodison Park (or another other stadia or sporting venue in the Liverpool City Region) and ask them to estimate how many seats are visible. Then use this to estimate the total stadium capacity by counting sections. Introduce concepts like scaling for older students.
