Katherine McCoy was born in Decatur Illinois in October of 1945. Her educational background in design comes from Michigan Statue University, where she had first studied interior design, before switching to the major in which she'd receive her degree, industrial design. Although McCoy graduated from college in 1967, some may say her career began during a family trip to the Museum of Modern Art in 1964, that awoke an interest within her to harness the power of design. McCoy's professional career began when she joined the design firm, Unimark International, where she was exposed to the style of Swiss typographic design which would prove to be extremely impactful in the rest of her career. After leaving Unimark, McCoy bounced between high level design positions at big corporations such as Chrysler, Omnigraphics, Designers & Partners, and the Xerox Education Group before founding the practice McCoy & McCoy with her husband in 1971. In this same year McCoy began her long and illustrious career in Design Education, teaching at many prestigious artistic institutions around the country, using many ground breaking teaching techniques such as a dropping go deadlines, papers, and finals in lieu of weekly critiques and semester end self-evaluations. This leads us to today where McCoy is now consulting in communications design curriculum, at the Kansas City Art Institute and is still working in McCoy & McCoy to lead in new design teaching principles.

McCoy was an innovator in both design and education, with her design often epitomizing the belief in theory as a basis for practice. Her work would dive into theoretical issues in both text and through visual elements which was extremely influential tools in disseminating postmodern aesthetics. However, McCoy's greatest contributions to design were most likely through education. One of McCoy's most influential contributions was that she made it a requirement for students to create written statements of great lengths to uphold their visual design projects. This technique quickly spread through artistic-academic institutions throughout both the US and the world, weaving text and speech into the fabric of visual arts and creating artistic minds that design with a purpose.
