Community means all people coming together to experience something in common. Our parks and libraries and other public spaces allow for a common area for people of all walks of life to come together on equal ground. It helps create equity within the larger community.

Community means connection, support, and shared growth. It’s about the people—students, parents, teachers, and neighbors—coming together to learn from each other and build something greater than what any of us could do alone. In the library, I see community every day: students helping one another with research, teachers collaborating on projects, etc. To me, community is rooted in kindness, curiosity, and a willingness to show up for one another, no matter the weather—something we Montanans know a thing or two about.

In this time of turmoil and social isolation, people need to feel connected even more. Public spaces provide that space. Whether you are interacting with others or just sitting within the space feeling the energy, this is an important service the spaces provide. They remind us that we are all human and deserving of respect and support.

To me, communities are formed through connections of shared experiences and can be large or small. We form communities with our family members, friends, classmates, coworkers, neighbors, or fellow members of the town, state, or country we live in. Communities can also be formed with other living beings, including the animals and landscapes that surround us.

Public spaces allow everyone to have a place to gather, meet others, develop relationships, and engage with the humanities and intellectual discussions in a safe space. They are accessible to all in terms of being free or at a very low charge. They let people grow and develop new skills and feel connected to something larger than your isolated homes.
