Women comprise of the majority of the agricultural labour force in small-scale and subsistence farming. According to FAO, 43% of the agricultural labour force in developing countries is comprised by women and yet they account for an estimated two-thirds of the world's 600 million poor livestock keepers. The actual planting of crops is done by males, and females are responsible for maintaining and harvesting the crops. In terms of livestock, women usually tend to the pigs and tinier livestock, while men tend to the cattle.

Commercial agriculture is opening new opportunities for women to undertake paid employment outside the family farm, particularly through participation in non-traditional export crop production as contract farmers or wage employees. Many women end up doing work in fields like nontraditional export crop production where they perform as contract farmers or wage employees. The way women are paid causes them to struggle financially because of the fact that what they earn is gender-biased. Women in commercial agriculture have very intense workloads and work in intensive, low skilled jobs while men have managerial positions.

Most difficulties that women in agriculture face are based on gender-specific issues that control their ability to work. Females have limited access to financing markets, land, agricultural training, education, safe working conditions, and more. Overall, they do not receive equal treatment in the workplace since men are treated superior compared to women. The limitations women face make is difficult for them to receive opportunities for higher earning and a steady source of income. Women in agriculture in several counties cannot own land and gender bias limits a women's access to credit. Having credit is important because it can aid them in purchasing tools that they could you to be efficient when farming.

As mentioned previously, women do not have equal treatment as men do. It is very hard for women to bring their goods into markets and to sell them. If women had the same access to productive resources as men, women could boost their yields by 20–30%. This could raise the overall agricultural output in developing countries by 2.5 to 4%. Even women in developing countries who are not subject to any limitations mainly still rely on their husbands to be in charge of business transactions because other people might not be okay with doing business with a women.
