Student Debt

Whether graduating high school or college, debt seems to always be in our future. We have debt for school, houses, business loans, and so many other obstacles in life. This snake is particularly interesting to use because it is 'constricting' the graduate. Getting into debt is not an immediate 'death' but rather a slow, agonizing death that you don't even notice right away. The graduate himself looks completely oblivious to the trap he's found himself in. The student is likely going to be blindsided by the amount of debt he has accumulated and will be 'dead' before he knows it. The first loan could be small and not deadly, but the more you accumulate the thicker and bigger the snake. Another symbol in this image, is green often means being reborn and it is interesting that the snake is colored green and that snakes often shed their skins, because although graduating is moving to a new phase of life, it is also a trap. While the blue background could symbolize freedom and peace of graduating and earning a degree. Getting untangled from debt is also very difficult because of the constricting qualities. You can not suddenly be jerked away but have to slowly wiggle yourself out.

Hallie S, Alicia K, Sophia M, Kati J

When looking at this advertisement, we noticed that everything is black and white except the crayons. This contrast catches the intended audience's eyes. The audience is adults or parents specifically because of the adult hand but also the inference of children with the image of crayons. Because of the childish aspect and the word "you" it is more directed and personal playing with the pathos of the audience. The handwriting contributes to the child aspect and "everything" is bolded which is implying not only the message of quitting smoking but also any other addictive substance or habit. We also would like to point out that the crayons are used and colorful. This implies that life is messy and children have used them. The advertisement contributes to the contrast of innocence and reality. It highlights the impact of parents on children, specifically the message of being a role model to your children.

In this image, it portrays how because of a certain appearance (that being Mickey Mouse) it provides general appeal to all those familiar with the character. However, a common house mouse can come across as gross and dirty. Although they are the same animal, the subtle differences in Mickeys distinct qualities leads to a more common appeal coming from his character. This portrays how in every day life individuals' appearance can be used to make assumptions about that individual. Although visual ques can help with learning an individuals personality, it is not the most important factor whatsoever. Even though in the image it seems that Mickey might be more ideal than the other mouse, in reality they are both just the same animal. Appearance can be important, but not the most vital quality of an individuals life. What is visual to others is only the external factor, and doesn't take in the internal factors at all.

Ariana D, Kaden S, Bayley K

In this image, we see the representation of a selfish or one-sided relationship. The person in the tree calls for help from his "friend", but the friend chooses to use the axe, even though there's a ladder close by to be used. This decision shows the selfishness of the said "friend" and that he doesn't have the person in the tree's best interests at heart. Based on this, sometimes our friends can do more damage to our lives than good. We may be blinded by what their actions do to us both physically and emotionally. When looking at this image we see a large amount of green in the background, including the sky. Not only does this make us focus on the main point of the image but it also creates a negative emotion of sorts. With the fact that the sky is not actually green and with an overuse of the color it creates almost a feeling of unease which also helps to give the main point a center focus.

Nike is an athletic brand that sponsors the greatest athletes the world has to offer. They work with prodigies and superstars daily and have seen greatness first hand. So, this video that they produced has a deep meaning for sports and the other great things that their brand represents. The protagonist is not a character of athletic greatness. He's a face the audience, which would likely be sports fans, would not recognize. He's an average guy in sub-par physical shape. The narrator talks about greatness in a deep, neutral toned voice. He is serious and passionate in his words, which sets the mood of the video. He claims that greatness, something Nike would know lots about, is not attainable for only a few, but for everyone. Even this ordinary guy wearing loose, bland clothing can do it running as slow as he is. The landscape is just as bland as him. No energy, noise, or people. Just the guy, the road, and his goals. He chases down a camera moving away from him, while the narrator strikes the audience with his motivated words about greatness and possibilities. The simplicity of the visuals makes it easy to focus on just the runner. This indirectly conveys the idea that hard work with no distractions and total focus is the road to greatness. The audience is definitely a group of average people trying to be their best, admiring the people that Nike usually represents. They likely do their physical work in a similar environment to the guy in this video, not a glamorous stadium with thousands of fans. Most people feel like this guy in the video, and so it was one of Nike's most relatable and inspiring advertisements. This video tells their customers that they too could be admirable and great.

Emily Frasure
Laytan Tanuvasa
Jordan Scott
Dj Oats
Adrian Galindo

The message that is portrayed through this image is a rather straightforward one. The entire frontside of the $20 bill is painted with the words "I AM A PIECE OF PAPER AND I OWN YOUR SOUL". This phrase initially seems wicked and iniquitous, but displaying society's truths in such a blunt way makes it feel a little less taunting. The last three words of this sentence are emphasized because they are the only words underlined. This tactic helps portray the severity of the bargain for our souls. I'm fairly confident in saying that money is a top priority/issue for many humans in today's world, and not just referring to Americans. Money consumes us because without it, we as humans are limited to few opportunities of todays society. People subconsciously allow themselves to make decisions purely founded upon the idea of making money and becoming wealthy. A common one today being the decision of going to college. Many young adults may attend higher educational programs for up to ten years in the hopes of earning a higher paying career. Some people may find themselves absorbed in money to the point it overhauls their lives and deteriorates their relationships. It is unfortunate, but undeniable, that people often have no boundaries or morals when it comes to obtaining wealth. This is what is meant by ' I OWN YOUR SOUL'. Greed is too overwhelming for mankind to defeat.

-sawyer h.

The image we chose potentially holds a lot of feelings and emotions. The image utilizes association of shapes to have car key like a gun, so one assumes it is talking about gun violence. On closer inspection, the viewer realizes that it is a set of car keys, pointing out how many people die in car accidents. Granted both guns and cars do kill people the image is trying to show that its higher deaths rate cause by cars, hints at the car keys. It doesn't insult the idea that guns take lives, but suggests to the viewer that there are things more common and lethal, something they do everyday.
The caption under the image explains that driving a car takes one life every 25 seconds, trying to explain how cars are more dangerous. The stark gray-green color created the visual of either a morgue or murder weapon, looking at the cause of death for a person. It emphasizes a serious tone, with which it can reinforce the simple safety message of driving safe.
People have such a fear created around guns. People don't take driving/operating a motor-vehicle as seriously as handling a gun. The strict regulations and rules cause more fear surrounding guns. By putting the key in the shape of a gun it sends a strong message of clarity stating that cars are just as dangerous (if not more dangerous) than guns. Sometimes people don't understand how dangerous driving can be if you're not careful, and it is the same with guns. This is why there are precautions and rules, but maybe if people took driving precautions and rules as seriously as they did gun precautions and rules many more deaths from vehicles can be prevented.

Jane Dorny, Nele Hebbeler, Lauren Almeida, Kamia Masuda, Zoey Cook, Tanaia Dolson:

This image is part of an anti-smoking campaign. It has a cigarette with the words "I want to live not die." The cigarette is slowly burning until the last cigarette remains. It is only the butt of the cigarette, it reads "die". The image does a good job accurately depicting addiction and how it can take over someone's life. Even if someone has intentions of quitting smoking, once you start it is hard to take your control back. This visual argument uses pathos to provoke fear. Smoking can destroy lives, and we are not turning a blind eye to the fact that smoking addictions can kill. The main point of anti-smoking campaigns such as this, is to scare people before they smoke for the first time. They use fear tactics on young, impressionable people in hopes that they won't start. I feel that slippery slope logical fallacy could also be applicable here. Smoking does not lead to immediate death, but eventually it could. We have to be careful because we know how negative the affects of smoking can be, but the adds are meant to scare.

In the image that we chose it portrays cigarettes and bullets together in a pack. They are similar in size, shape, and color. This image shows how similar cigarettes and bullets can be to each other, not only in appearance but in effect. The text at the bottom of the image doesn't even mention the cigarettes, asking "how long will you dodge the bullet?" This statement suggests that the effects that they both have are exactly the same: cigarettes are just as lethal as bullets. Although the statement doesn't refer to cigarettes, the message still implies them. How long can you dodge, or avoid cigarettes. Society has a very strong hold on what influences us. Drugs are one of those strong influences that we are constantly trying to avoid, the question that this image is asking is, how long can you avoid them without the consequences of getting a bullet.

This image shows ten models together in a line modeling a line of clothing for Victoria's Secret. In this image the words "The Perfect Body" is written across the front. This gives the audience the impression that in order to have the perfect body or look "perfect" you have to look like models. This image doesn't take into consideration that there is a lot of diversity in body types and different bodies and that they are all "perfect" regardless of the way that they look. This also doesn't factor in the fact that the picture has been edited and filtered in order to give off this "perfect" image. In this image another part of the wording says that this is a "comfortable fit". All of the women in the image are dressed up with makeup and edited giving the opposite of a situation that would be "comfortable". Images like this gives especially young girls the thought that they can't be beautiful without having their body look a certain way. Confidence issues and body image issues are a big problem in the United States because of what is seen on the media.
-Kelsie Renzello, Blake Bowler, Chloe Knight, Allie Vanlandingham

In the comic, there is white man wearing a suit with a red tie, licking his lips and sitting in a fancy chair labeled “The Rich”. He has a teacup next to his plate. These elements show that he has a very fancy and wealthy style of living. There is a large pie in front of him labeled “U.S. Wealth”. Serving the man is an elephant, with a towel labeled GOP over his arm, who is holding a bowl full of whipped cream labeled “Tax Cuts”. The GOP stands for Grand Old Party, referring to the Republican Party, which the man is arguably a part of because of his red tie. The elephant is asking the man in the suit “And how about some whipped cream with that?!” representing the tax cuts given to those who make large amounts of money and can afford to do what is needed to receive tax cuts, such as donating to charities. Sitting next to the man is a white woman with a blue shirt that says “Middle Class”. She has one slice of the pie in front of her, and a class cup that is half full. To children stand next to her seat to her left and right with sad expressions. At the other end of the table from the man in the suit is a black woman in a green and yellow shirt labeled “Poor”. She has four kids around her, looking over the table with sad expressions. On the plate in front of her is three small crumbs. She has no fork next to her plate, and her cup is small and half full. Both the women are sitting on metal folding chairs. In the top right corner of the panel is a black text box that says “Dessert, American style,” in red letters. After analyzing this image, it's clear to us that the economy is imbalanced in favor of the wealthy.

Some people may look really happy on the outside and be crumbling on the inside. Also, society expects us to be "strong" all the time, with this said there is no time for a weak moment. for example the photo of Robbin Williams portrays that he is very happy when in reality he was severely depressed and from the films he is in you would never guess this as he is always the happy character. for example he made the movie jumanji alive and exciting, these are not the traits of someone with depression.

This image is trying to show what athletes have to go through to play at the collegiate level, and how powerful, aggressive, and controlling the NCAA are. The giant men depicted as the NCAA are being shown as this big bully picking on the small football player most likely to make the audience have compassion for him. The football in the middle of the two majors players is depicting the unionization between the two, and how small it really is. Compared to the NCAA men it's the size of a small dog and looks like they could easily destroy it, while compared to the player it's a normal sized football.
