Roads have been around for thousands of years, but interstate highways were first developed in the U.S. in the mid 1950's. The interstate highway system was developed because President Dwight Eisenhower realized that citizens weren't able to cross the U.S. quickly in case of an emergency. So, after many failed attempts to build an interstate highway system, the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1954 was passed. After that, over 41,012 miles of network roads were constructed two years later. Several more expansions of the Eisenhower Interstate System, named after the president that made it happen, were added to finally become the interstate highway system the U.S. has today.

Roads haven't always been the way they are now. They used to be paths of animals that people followed to hunt.Roads in the U.S. haven't been as nice as they now are. President Eisenhower recalled that in 1919 he crossed th U.S. on undeveloped roads. In 1938 Congress attempted to create six different roads.Again, in 1944 Congress tried, but never got the money. Finally in 1954, a year into Dwight Eisenhower's Presidential term, the Federal-Aid Highway Act was passed. Then two years later a U.S international highway system was created. This highway system is now known as the Eisenhower Interstate System, named after the one who got it done.

The first hard-surfaced American road was the 62-mile Lancaster Turnpike in Pennsylvania, which was completed in 1795, but most automobile traffic didn't move on two lane roads until the mid-1950s, thanks to Dwight D. Eisenhower. When he came into office in 1953, Dwight Eisenhower knew a national roadway system was needed, due to his slow, crude experience in the military, where he took two months to take a convoy across the country. This led to the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1954 which passed with $175 million dollars earmarked for construction of a national system. Today, this interstate highway system, called the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways or the Eisenhower Interstate System, has more than 46,726 miles covering the country.

Former president Dwight Eisenhower took action to making highways because he knew they were very much needed. Years later, the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1954 was passed, and highways were being made. Because of Dwight Eisenhower, people are able to travel quickly and smoothly by using highway systems.

In the mid-1950s they became two lane roads. The traffic would build up and it would take a long time for someone to get to there destination. Many people, like President Eisenhower, knew that this would have to be fixed. In 1954 the Federal-Aid Highway Act passed with 175 million dollars earmarked for construction of a national system.

The use of roads was implemented by early Americans for more efficient travel. But after the passage of time, in the early 1900s, many roads were in bad condition and very difficult to travel on. So, President Dwight Eisenhower rebooted the construction of a new international road system in 1953. This allowed for well made road systems that have lead to better transportation and the national interstate highways that we travel on today.
