What makes this space distinct from others?

This place is distinct from others as it connects to the little neck bay with a bridge where people can walk. On the bridge, you can see the park and cars passing by on the highway. Anyone can visit the park as it's open to the public. There are maps around the park to navigate the paths. The Crocheron Park was bought in 1924 and built by 1936 with picnic grounds and an enlarged lake. This space limits and promotes social interactions, as you can go in groups or take a walk alone.

Who has entry to this space, and who does not? Why might that be? What kind of rights or other kind of markers does one need to gain entry to this space?

I don't think that any social identities exist in this place, as it's a public space and a park. All ages, religions, and race are welcomed in this place. There are many entrances to this park and maps to navigate the trail. There are really no power dynamics at this park, as there's a spot for everyone to fit in. There are cameras around the park for surveillance. There are some individual issues that some may not be able to see, such as litter which can pollute the environment and harm the wildlife. Overall, it is a clean park and the maintenance of the space reflects the values of people that have entry to it.

My personal experience with this park is that I live close by so it's the park that I can walk to nearby and I know the trail path. It connects to my childhood school park as well, so I know my way around. I think that the park is calm and has beautiful views. Many people come here to walk, run, play sports and enjoy the fresh air. It's a very open space where you can enjoy fresh air and be with family and friends.

Walking research

Yes, I believe that "walking research" can enhance our understanding and awareness of the spaces, lives and bodies we inhabit. It allows us to connect to the environment around us with a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context. Connecting it to Springy and Truman's Walking Introduction Chapter, walking does enable people to tune into their sensory experiences. Walking engages multiple senses such as sight, sound, touch and smell that creates a richer understanding of the environment and the people surrounding it. Also, walking does become a way of being responsive to a place as it activates modes of participation that are situated and relational. Walking through a place increases body awareness and people become more attuned to their physical state and how their bodies move around. While I was walking in this park, I felt relaxed. I like that this park has a long trail and I can walk a straight path. It has many trees and animals such as birds and squirrels. It's a very shaded area as the trees can block the sun sometimes. There aren't many flowers, just trees and grass.

Post-Walk Uptake

A curiosity I have that has arisen about Crocheron Park is how does the park’s social dynamic shift from early morning to late evening. I feel like there would be more people during the afternoon time, as there is an elementary school right across from it. Also, this park has many older structures. How has this park changed overtime? Is there anything such as invasive species impacting the park’s ecology? I would like to explore more about the parks’ history and how it evolved. I want to learn more about how this park was named the Crocheron Park. This experience at Crocheron Park can influence my approach to other spaces I visit or my understanding of different environments as I will be more mindful in the little subtle details and appreciation of historical spaces. The act of walking and observing allowed me to notice things I might have otherwise overlooked such as the sounds of nature or the smell of different plants in the park. I became more aware of the park’s landscape and social interactions. This research method enhanced my awareness of the space and its social significance as I see people talking and their social interactions, people playing tennis in the park and the squirrels jumping on the trees. I incorporated different modes such as text, pictures and videos into my Padlet to convey the experience of my walk. I felt like these modes help the reader experience Crocheron Park without actually going there. I chose these choices as it was easy to take pictures and videos on my walk and add text to express my experience throughout my walk. I think that the visual was the most effective in capturing the nuances of my walking experience as it showed the exact bringe i was talking about that connects from the park to the little bay with a highway underneath. I felt like it would be difficult to picture, so I included a video on that.
