 Down syndrome is a natural arrangement of chromosomes that represents a condition that has always existed in humans and that it is present in all regions of the world and often has varying effects on learning styles, physical traits or health.

 Access to health care, appropriate use of early intervention programmes, inclusive education and appropriate research are essential to the growth and development of the individual.

 In December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted (resolution 66/149), declaring March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day to be celebrated annually starting in 2012. The General Assembly invited all Member States and relevant organizations of the United Nations system  and other international organizations and civil society, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day in an appropriate manner to educate the public about Down Syndrome.

 Background Information
 It is estimated that 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 live births worldwide has Down syndrome.  Each year approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with this genetic disorder.  It is also believed that there are about 250,000 families in the United States of America who are affected by Down syndrome.

 The quality of life of people with Down syndrome can be improved by meeting their healthcare needs, which includes regular medical check-ups to monitor mental and physical development and timely intervention, whether in the field of physiotherapy, counseling or special education.  People with Down syndrome can also achieve an optimal quality of life through parental care, support, medical guidance, and existing support systems in the community, such as the provision of private schools, for example.  All of these arrangements help to involve people with Down syndrome in society to empower them and achieve their goals.]]> 2023-06-02 23:35:27 UTC https://padlet.com/hlmgn1992/hvqezqapij09itje/wish/2613300113
