Consciousness • Philosophy • Neuroscience

I'm a PhD Student in Philosophy at the University of Bucharest, Romania. My host institution is University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I'll work under the supervision of prof. Giulio Tononi on his Integrated Information Theory of Consciousness. I contribute to a burgeoning field of neuroscientific theorizing about a consciousness a conceptual reflection inspired by the philosophy of Immanuel Kant.

Transcendental Revolution

"What reason would not be able to know of itself and has to learn from nature, it has to seek in the latter in accordance with what reason itself puts into nature." (Immanuel Kant - Critique of Pure Reason, Bxvi)

This enigmatic quote expresses a revolution in our thinking of the relation between the mind and the world. It says that neither is our mind a simple and more or less faithful recording of an outer reality, nor is the world a carefully orchestrated fiction of the mind. Rather it is only because consciousness itself imposes a network of structures unto the world that there is any manifest knowable reality. For there to be a world, there must be a constitutive background provided by the mind.

A Dance of Neurons

Inside your skull there is not only a wet, squishy, and warm 3-pounds of matter that you couldn't live without. Au contraire, there is anything outside your skull, including the skull itself, only because there is a jiggly structure of chit-chatty neurons inside. With the right architecture of connectivity, basically just a proper way of sending signals, there is a world that is breathed life unto. Recall your dreamless sleep - that's right, nothing to recall there. The You in you, and the World of you, are there only if and when billions of nervous cells affect each other in the right way. A marvelous dance indeed - for it creates a Universe.

Besides philosophical theorizing, I'm also drawn to writing. English is not my first-language, but I'm getting there. I read a lot of science-inspired novels, and if they have philosophical nuggets they get extra credit.

For the time that I've been given, however long or short, I seek not only to understand the world, but create worlds into it. That I want to be my writing - Worldbuilding. And as I build, know myself - Heautognosy. For who am I and how I am can only be revealed to me by what I do.
