Hello! I’m Aaron Keith S. Berongon, and I’ve always been passionate about music, especially OPM (Original Pilipino Music). I chose OPM because it captures so many aspects of Filipino life, connecting deeply with our emotions and stories. I’m particularly drawn to artists who create songs about sadness, love, and loss, as their lyrics and melodies resonate with me on a personal level. Artists and bands like December Avenue, Zack Tabudlo, Ben&Ben, IV of Spades, and Lola Amour offer comfort and reflection through their music, bringing out emotions that are often hard to express

For my featured element in Philippine pop culture, I chose December Avenue and its impact on Contemporary OPM. December Avenue has become one of the most beloved bands in the Philippines, known for their heartfelt storytelling about heartbreak, unrequited love, and resilience. I chose them because their songs resonate deeply with listeners, capturing Filipino emotions in such a relatable and honest way. December Avenue stands out because it embodies "hugot" culture a unique part of Filipino life that’s all about expressing and processing deep feelings, especially around love and loss. Their music has connected with audiences not only here at home but also with Filipinos around the world, making them an influential voice in today’s society.

December Avenue’s music has made a significant impact on Filipino society, especially through its influence on how people process and express their emotions. Using the Uses and Gratifications Theory as a framework, we can see that listeners turn to December Avenue’s songs to meet various emotional and social needs. Their songs about love, heartbreak, and resilience allow people to connect with their own experiences and feel understood. For many, listening to their music is a form of emotional release, allowing them to reflect on personal struggles and find comfort in shared experiences. This connection is even stronger on social media, where fans share lyrics and discuss the emotions that December Avenue’s songs evoke. In this way, their music entertains and serves as a source of community and personal reflection.

Beyond personal connection, December Avenue’s influence extends to broader cultural trends, shaping aspects of youth behavior and social interactions. Their "hugot" themes have influenced language and expressions commonly used by young people, both online and in daily conversation. Many fans incorporate their lyrics into captions, memes, and even fashion trends that reflect the mood and themes of the songs. As people interact with December Avenue’s music, they also embrace a more open, expressive approach to dealing with emotions, particularly around love and heartbreak. This has led to a shift in social behavior, where young people feel more comfortable being vulnerable and sharing their feelings, contributing to a cultural environment that values emotional authenticity and connection.
