Not long after the industrial revolution in the mid 1800’s, the sewing machine was invented by Elias Howe in 1845. The invention of the sewing machine changed the fashion industry as it allowed factories to mass produce clothing. This was much better than hand sewing since the sewing machine was much faster. After the industrial revolution, when women were able to start working, they were able to increase their families income by working in sweatshops or garment factories.

Fast fashion first started in the 1900’s, when smaller fashion brands like Zara came from Europe to the US. News companies such as the New York Times were the first to give the name “fast fashion” when Zara stated their mission to have their products go from design to store in only 15 days. By the 2000’s there were many more popular fast fashion brands such as H&M and Forever 21. Many teens were using clothing as a way to express themselves and create trends, increasing the popularity and want of quick, new and trendy clothing. At the time, cool, trendy and cheap clothing was considered a better idea than sustainable and more expensive clothing. This led to the continuous production of fast fashion.

In an investigation on fast fashion clothing, researchers tested 38 samples of children and adults clothing and accessories. Their study found that one in five products contained dangerous levels of chemicals such as lead, PFAS and phthalates. Due to Shein being accused of unethical business practices an investigation was done. This led to researchers finding a supplier site with barred windows and no emergency exits. As a result, they also found that most workers were working long hours and with exposure to dangerous chemicals. In Ghana, fast fashion is causing 77.1618 tons of fabric to end up in a landfill each day. This will leave a terrible impact on the environment as many fabrics are non- biodegradable and will take many years to break down. Fast fast is also contributing to water pollution, 20% of industrial water pollution comes from the textiles and dyes in the clothing.
