A limitation of brain plasticity is that the brain doesn't always recover completely or correctly by itself and so it can have adverse effects on brain function. for example some amputees experience phantom limb syndrome where they experience sensation from where their limb used to be. This shows that brain plasticity isn't always

Research and case studies, such as that of Jodie's, have revealed that functional recovery, the brain's recovering capacity carried out through axonal sprouting, reformation of blood vessels, and recruitment of homologous areas, is affected by various factors such as age, gender, and what's called cognitive reserve. The greater ability of women, the highly educated, and young to functionally recover can direct us to prioritise more vulnerable patients (the elderly, for example) making the information useful.

Research into brain plasticity has many practical applications. For example we know that after trauma the brain recovers quickly at first and then slows down. Therefore we understand that patients are likely to need treatment after trauma to speed up their recovery. We know the brain is able to recover and repair itself after trauma however assistance is needed to increase the speed of this progress (ie treatment). This research therefore will help those who have been in accidents and experienced trauma as their recovery will be improved due to this research.
