I am passionate about making theatre (scripted and devised) with young people, particularly boys. I think there is something powerful about the process of collaborating in a creative way for all young people, but the ways in which young men can be challenged through the making theatre together are really exciting and enriching. Our NSW curriculum includes a lot of devising but my absolute favourite thing to do in my job is direct our school musical.

I much prefer directing theatre these days, but I have been trying to extend my skills and challenge myself recently with some performing. I’ve been taking a series of Improv classes and have been stepping outside of my comfort zone with both Theatresports and Long-Form performances. I have really enjoyed the challenges of refining these skills and feel like I am a much better teacher for it. As I mentioned previously, I really enjoy the opportunity to combine my music skills with theatre when it comes time to do our school musical.

I try to approach my classes and rehearsals by creating a classroom where my students are respectful, ready to have fun, take risks and try new things. I am always keen to promote the importance of focus and discipline in lessons/rehearsals so we can then enjoy the play and fun that comes from taking the training wheels off. I think being a Drama teacher is all about forming positive relationships with students and I really value the chance to collaborate with the staff in my department to support our students to achieve.

I'm passionate about good education and excellent teaching. I believe what we teach in Drama is very important and relevant in the 21st Century - whether students pursue a career in Theatre or not; the skills are transferable and quite often set young people apart from others in the world, due to the empathy, social intelligence, collaborative skills and varied perspectives required when undertaking Drama courses.
I'm passionate about teaching students to identify these attributes offered in Drama (and in themselves) before they leave school.

I aim to make Drama lessons dynamic, creative and a positive experience for all students. I try to foster personal best opportunities for students in a supportive environment. The Drama classroom should be a safe space for students to be able to take risks and be challenged. I enjoy taking different approaches to lessons and being more diverse in my own learning - always looking for professional growth opportunities where I can learn alongside the students, such as teaching a practitioner that I have never taught before in order to learn more myself and broaden my repertoire of teaching topics.

I am good at 'producing' or managing a performance as I've got a good eye for detail and am organised. I always plan well in advance!
I am a real Drama educator, in that, I enjoy teaching the course(s) well above all else, always aiming to better the way in which I approach each topic.

I try to make my lessons enjoyable and beneficial to the students while also focusing on the outcomes students achieve. I focus a lot on feedback to students in order to help them make progress and use a lot of video editing to allow them to see where they can improve their work. I try, probably poorly, to use humour in my teaching and I generally feel I have a good rapport with my students. I really enjoy teaching and hope this comes across to my students during my lessons. At my new school we have really small IB classes and I find this challenging as in my previous school we had large classes at A-level and I find it difficult to build and maintain the energy of a Drama/Theatre lesson with very few students in the class.

It is a nice feeling when after years of teaching a student they achieve well in an exam or succeed in a performance and you can feel you were a small part of that. Equally it is rewarding when you help students access acting as a career or go on to study it at a higher level. It's nice to think that students have benefited from having you as a teacher.

I like to encourage student growth through the use of guided discussion. For example, when we are interpreting a play or watching an excerpt by a director they are unfamiliar with, I prefer to lead them with questions rather than tell them what I hope that they will see. I think that the resulting conversation - while it takes longer than an explanation by me - will help students process the new material in a way they can understand and with their own language. The approach takes longer so I do think we cover less material than I could introduce otherwise, but students forget a lot less this way.

I'm really passionate about creating or finding a coherent concept behind a performance, whether I'm analyzing a work with students or helping them create their own. I think that all theater begins with an idea, if not a message. I love taking this approach when comparing stagings of plays, but also with student performances. It's kind of like backwards design in teaching - you start with what you want to have as an end result, and work backwards, from large choices about the emotional affect to smaller choices about costume and cutting text.

Theatre in my classroom has allowed students to collaboratively create life changing plays that have helped to heal beyond our community.

We also had the opportunity to study in London. It was so emotional to see a performance of "Macbeth" at the Globe Theatre and share that experience with my scholars. I must admit even after the experience I have not taught theatre history in 4 years. Especially, after moving into a new building with a phenomenal theatre. I have focused more on performances. It is my desire to return to teaching ti because students learn about the world internationally, nationally and locally. Through the IB program I am eager to return to my passion for theatre history.

In regards to my theatre skills I have mixed emotions because I enjoy directing plays but also enjoy teaching acting and tech theatre. I am the only theatre teacher on my campus. I have built my program and teach what I desire. The theatre arts classes (beginners) love theatre games, improvisation and pantomime. We are currently focused on scripted works which are more challenging for students because alot of them aren't interested in developing characters, memorizing lines or participating in a play (because it takes work). But, I enjoy changing the mindsets and using teaching strategies to motivate their learning. We utilize a great deal of technology in my classes. So, students understand the benefits of theatre arts and their future career choice.

I feel that this section is the bottom of my theatre resume. I will list the skills I know/hope I have in regards to my being a drama teacher.
- Short/Longform Improvisation. I had an improv troupe at my high school and we would perform regularly and make short films for the 48 Hour Film Project: Boston.
- Playwriting/Screenplay writing
I enjoy writing plays and recently had one published. I have made several short films and they have won awards in various festivals.
- Ballet/Jazz/Tap - I'm an actor who moves well but I don't consider myself a dancer. I'm comfortable staging musical numbers.
- Physical Theatre - I have done workshops around Viewpoints, Laban, Ruth Zapora, and Boal.
- Acting - I was trained in Uta Hagen in my undergrad but branched out afterward and lean a bit more toward Meisner. I tend to draw upon whatever works best for a given scene.
- Directing - have had lots of training in my undergrad and master's programs. The William Ball book A Sense of Direction is a go to text for me because it has clear and concise language around using verbs.
- Hopefully common sense. : )

I worked hard on my curriculum and found that the following worked well for me. I had four levels of Acting class with the senior year Acting IV taken for honors level credit.
- Acting I - self-esteem / confidence building with a lot of work on theatre basics, stage directions, simple stage combat, tons of short form improvisation, sketch writing, and basic scene scoring, and scene study.
- Acting II - starting to explore the craft in greater depth with Long Form improvisation, Forensic work, children's theatre, Internal vs. external acting, more scene scoring and scene study.
- Acting III - Overarching goal was physical theatre, students would be exposed to Zapora, Laban, Boal, and Bogart. Students would work on audition techniques, Shakespeare, playwriting, and advanced scene scoring and advanced scene study.
- Acting IV - major focus was directing, working on a director's notebook, casting, rehearsal techniques, metaphor in art, blocking, coaching, and ending with a senior directed one-act festival. The second half of the year we would work on college level scene study and then some film acting/directing techniques.

What is better than what we do as drama teachers? There is lots of work associated with it of course but I never felt my work was draining. My new job as an administrator confirmed that what I had as a drama teacher was special. There is magic in working with students and everyone coming together to create this living / breathing piece of art.
In the end the greatest thing about teaching is working with the students. It's the main reason I became an administrator. I wanted to be able to work with and help more students than just the ones in my program. Now, I'm working on having a greater influence on the curriculum building wide. I hope to help my teachers incorporate more drama into their lessons. Theatre, as we all know, has skills that transcend the craft itself. I have been better equipped for interviews, presentations, learning about others, and developing the ability to fail gloriously from my time in the theatre. I'm passionate about bringing these lessons to all subjects.
