A KWL chart is a type of assessment that can be used to activate students' prior knowledge about a topic in the "K" section, by asking what they already know. The "W" section states the purpose of the lesson and activity by having the class or individual student state what they want to know. Finally, the "L" section assesses what the class or the individual student learned from the activity or lesson. A KWL chart can be filled out as a class by the teacher, or individuate as a handout, where the students must write in each section themselves.

9. Round Robin Charts

With Round Robin charts, a teacher divides the class into groups of 4 or 5. Each group is then given a chart and some markers. Each chart has an open ended question on it in which the group of students work together to answer. Once time is up, each group of students will pass the chart on, and the next group will write their answer on the chart. Finally, the teacher will ask the groups to share their different answers, and the teacher can assess the students' understanding as a whole group. In the picture below, students are giving verbal responses to the question rather than written.

This technique is used to assess students' relevant learning. The goal is to find out if the students understand why they learned something, and if they understand why it is important. the "3" asks the students to state 3 things that they didn't know prior to the lesson. "2" asks the students for 2 things that surprised them about the topic of the lesson. Finally, "1" asks the students to state 1 thing that they would like to start doing with what they learned. In this assessment, students can respond orally or in a written response. They can also answer the questions in groups, or individually.

Kahoot is designed by the teacher, and can either count as a grade, or just a fun review game. The students can either join teams and work in groups, or just play as individuals. Kahoots can also assess on the time of completion. It also does not move ahead until everyone has submitted an answer. The quizzes can either be true or false, short answer, or multiple choice.

Discussion posts are an interactive tool that allows students to respond to questions with either a short answer or essay. The teacher can assess a student's understanding by reading their posts in response to a certain thread. Students can also reply to other classmates' posts on a discussion board. This is not only an assessment tool, but it is also a tool that can be used to engage students in different learning styles through their peers' responses.

The jigsaw assessment is a tool which involves each individual student being assigned to a particular subject. This student is responsible for the information about their topic. Then, the individuals are placed in groups in which every group member was assigned a different topic. The goal is for the students to come together with their individual information to answer a bigger question. This can be used to assess an individual's or a group's understanding on a certain topic based on the information they were responsible for. Not only does this assessment lighten the work load for students by distributing the information across the group, however, it also saves on instructional time for the teacher.

Ticket out the door is an assessment tool that is used at the very end of a lesson during the closure. The main idea for having a ticket out the door is to assess what level students are at with what they just learned. Most of the time the teacher uses a ticket like shown below, to assess what students know, and what they still need work on. Although a ticket out the door can consist of any activity, most of the time it is used to gather information on how the students are doing on a certain subject.

Quizlet is a very popular tool used for review, instruction, and assessment. With quizlet, students can create digital flash cards using a term and its definition. Then, after the student studies the flashcards, they can quiz themselves. With this tool, teachers and students can both work together in making different types of study guides. Then, a teacher can create either true/false, multiple choice, matching, or short answer questions to be on their assessment. Students can take these quizzes on their own, or in class either asynchronously, or synchronously.

1. Snowball

The snowball assessment is mostly done at the end of a lesson during the closure. During the snowball assessment, a teacher might pose a question based on the topic the students had just learned about that day. Each student would have a scratch sheet of notebook paper in which they would write just their responses down. Then, the students would be instructed to ball up their responses, like a snowball, and wait for the teacher to say "go". Then, the students would toss their papers gently in the air, and students would be instructed to walk around and pick up another person's response. Then, each student would read the response they picked up. This is a fun, interactive assessment, that allows the teacher to have an understanding of how well their students are understanding the material.
