NagasakiGeneral considerations　
  • TMGH is located in Sakamoto campus, around 4km north of downtown Nagasaki city (i.e. around 1-hour walk or 30 minutes by tram) and 3km north from Nagasaki station. The best options listed below within a 10-minute walk of the university are Mezame hostel and Alpha Inn, and university or private accommodation (subject to availability). There are many bars & restaurants in the Hamaguchi-machi /Urakami areas near the university. 
  • You may wish to travel outside Nagasaki during Golden Week. Therefore to avoid double-paying for accommodation, you may consider to book accommodation for April in the first instance, with a separate booking for May/June
  • Ideally students would arrive in Nagasaki at the beginning of April for the start of the course. Whilst it could be possible to join the sessions remotely during April (i.e. from home location or in quarantine), it is essential to be in Nagasaki in time for the lab practical sessions which are held in mid-late May/June and cannot be delivered remotely.
  • Due to ongoing travel restrictions, it is very unlikely that the Philippines component of the course will happen. Instead, the Nagasaki component of the course is likely to be extended by 1 week, with the course ending on June 18, 2021. 
Hostels
  • Mezame hostel: clean, new, walking distance to the university. Close to many bars/restaurants. Female, mixed dormitory-style (private cabin-style sleeping areas) and private rooms.  Shared bathrooms, common room, kitchen and laundry. Cafe/bar with good food selection and craft beer. See website for more details. Prices from 3,500JPY/night (longer stay discount may be possible). A good (the best?) option. 
  • HafH (Home away from Home): co-working type place, dorm (cabin-style rooms) or private rooms. Located in downtown Nagasaki, also other locations. Various plans available. Check the HafH website for more information.
  • Hostel Casa Noda (near Nagasaki train station, see website) and Casa Blanca guesthouse (near downtown, see website). Both more traditional dorm rooms from 2,500JPY/night. 
  • Route cafe and Petit hostel: 5 semi-private cabin rooms (3,990 JPY/night), and a 6-bed family room for a family or group of friends (15,960 JPY/night). Close to Nagasaki station. See website for more info.

Hotels
  • Alpha Inn. Short walk from the university. Good option for shorter stays/visiting lecturers. See website. 
    *attention* The website is available only in Japanese and the staffs are not good English speakers. If you bring some kinds of  mobile translator with you or you yourself can speak some Japanese, that would be fine. 
  • MP Hotels Nagasaki Mizube-No-Mori. from 3,980 yen/night. The location is kind of far from the university. (45~50 min by trams). However, because it is located in the middle of the city, you can easily access to shopping stores, restaurants, parks and sightseeing spots. You can cook dishes in your rooms but can also eat at the cafeteria on the 1st floor of the hotel.

  • Generally difficult to arrange standard contracts for a short period of 2-3 months. 
  • If not being rented by existing masters students, some private accommodation may be available to rent. Inquire via the university or course director.

Nagasaki University

Nagasaki University is a national university and is well-known as the pioneer of the medical school in Japan. In fact, the first western medical science was introduced and practiced in Nagasaki in 1857 that attracted many excellent medical practitioners from all over the country. In addition to this, the Japan’s first and only institute for tropical medicine was also established in 1942, that has been contributing the development of tropical medical science in Japan.

  • Nagasaki City area has four tram lines. The tram lines provide easy access to most of the city’s main attractions and run approximately every 5-8 minutes from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm.
  • Easy to use, announcements  also in English
  • Enter the tram through the rear door and exit through the forward door. 
  • Pay cash to the driver when exiting, or use an IC card (Touch your IC card to the reader when you get on and touch it again when you get off)
  • One ride cost 130 yen regardless of how many stops you take. 
  • A one day pass for unlimited use of trams on one calendar day is available for 500 yen

Bus
  • A little cheaper than the tram, but harder to navigate without speaking/reading Japanese. Further information here.
Cycling
  • A good option to get around the city. Relatively flat from the University to downtown, or Dejima. However, many steep hills around the edge of the city
  • Generally safe, theft very unusual
  • Brompton riders can bring bike on the plane
  • Folding bikes allowed on trains if in a carry case
Taxi
  • Traditional style: pickup on the street or order by phone. No Uber or app-based services. Some basic Japanese is useful. Generally pay in cash. Circa 1,000 JPY from the university to downtown Nagasaki
Longer distanceTrain
  • Excellent reliable train network. Purchase tickets at the station or in advance on the JR Kyushu website. Nagasaki/Urakami to Hakata (Fukuoka) takes around 2 hours to connect to the Shinkansen. Local trains to destinations like Huis Ten Boasch, Sasebo or Shimabara
Bus
  • Buses to various locations (Unzen, Obama, Iojima, Oita etc.) from Nagasaki bus station, more or less opposite Nagasaki train station. 
Plane
  • Nagasaki: Various domestic (Tokyo Haneda/Narita, Osaka Itami/Kansai, Kobe, Nagoya, Naha (Okinawa), Goto, Iki, Tsushima) and international (Shanghai, Hong Kong) destinations. Further information on the Nagasaki Aiport website.

  • There is a canteen at Sakamoto campus. This is used by most TMGH students and faculty for lunch and often dinner. Meals around 500JPY.
