A think a dominant theme in this book is that sometimes to get to good times you have to go through hard times.

The author used the minor characters to create this theme because many of the minor characters created problems for the main characters (Fritz, Gerta, and Gerta's Mom). For example Officer Muller figured out there was a tunnel and was going to kill them so they had to face the time where they thought they were going to die but then he helped them.

I think that the conflict is man vs man in the way that the two siblings are trying to escape East Germany but they are trying not to be caught by the police.

Setting creates the theme because they have to escape East Germany but the setting makes them face a hard time because they cannot be caught while digging.

Some more evidence to support this is the fact that they had to face the hard time of not being able to see her family for 4 years. Another time was when Gerta and Anna were not friend they both had to go through hard times of not having friends but in the end they all became friends again.

All of us think that one of the stories main theme is you have to overcome bad things to get good things, for example Gerta was living a not so great life in the east side of Berlin, disconnected from her Father and Dominic. She gets caught, her brother is arrested and they have no future in east Berlin. Anna stops being friends with her. Their Father dances to signify to dig. They find a letter with a drawing and they find a air raid shelter where they dig to the other side of the wall which is west Berlin. Anna also becomes friends with her again

I think the common theme in the story is that people go through hard times and still have to adapt to change. For example, in the book, the family has to adapt to the war going on. They also have to learn to change and adapt to the wall being there and the soldiers. The author use the craft move to show what characters are feeling and how they are learning to adapt to change.

My author Jennifer A. nielson's craft move was that she made the reader feel a sort of empathy for the characters in the book. She made readers feel how the characters are feeling deep inside. For example, on page 137, the family doesn't have food so she makes readers feel bad for the characters.
