     Madonna of the Slums is an art work that follows the theme of separating rural and urban lives to show their differences and reflections of reality. As modernization and economic development continues to result in the change of rural areas,  many people are left to dwell in the downside areas of the city. Portrayed by the subjects of the painting (the mother and the child), Manansala's work reflects the life of people living in poverty, and finding refuge in the slums of highly populated urban residential areas.
