Brian was striking his hatchet off of a rock. I think that it isn't working because like the author said Brian needs something softer to catch the sparks. I think that Brian might get a pet of some sort because he needs to do something to stay sane and a pet possibly a squirrel or bunny would be perfect for Brian. If Brian gets a fire going he can cook fish, and other animals but if the animals have fur on it he has to skin it. How is Brian going to stay sane if he doesn't get a pet or something. Will Brian be driven to insanity by the wild. He could skin animals to get a bigger fire or get more bark.
