For students with autism, the process of sensory integration demands effort and attention. Being outside, in the environment, allows students an opportunity to touch and feel things in our natural world, at a pace that suits them. Students can touch the bark of a tree or the crunch leaves on the ground. Using fun, play based, outdoor activities can help support students with sensory integration difficulties.

An activity, like writing words using found materials from nature, can be differentiated to accommodate a variety of learners. Students who are developing their phonemic awareness could start with making a few letters or their name. More advanced students could write words or phrases that pertain to environmental education.

All terrain wheel chairs can allow students with limited mobility the opportunity to get into nature and explore the trails. It allows students with limited mobility to have the same experience as student who are more mobile. While the cost might be prohibitive for a single school, an outdoor education centre could purchase one for students with limited mobility to access when they are visiting the facility.

When supporting students with behavioural concerns in the outdoor and environmental education field, it is important to be aware of potential behaviours and triggers. Having a BSP (Behaviour Safety Plan) for students with more extreme behaviours would provide a concrete plan for what to do in the event of negative behaviours. In general, it is important to have clear boundaries and ensure they are made clear to the students. Safety rules should be clear and concise as well.
