One of my thoughts is that Mrs. Jones gave the money to Roger because she sensed that they were important to him. And she trusted him, so she gave him money to Roger to buy the shoes. I have more hypotheses. This is one of them: He might have lied and got something else. Another thought is that Roger might have wanted the shoes to act rich so that people wouldn't pity him. I strongly think #1. This is evidence: He asked for them.

I think the blue suede shoes are important to Roger because it makes him look rich, the woman understood how the boy felt because she used to steal stuff that she wanted just like Roger. My evidence from the text is that in the story, Mrs. Jones said that she did stuff to get things she wanted. She said, “I have done many things which I wouldn’t tell you nor would I tell god if he didn’t know.”. That means that she has done bad things to get what she wants, just like Roger.

It isn’t helpful to be told that someone is better than you because it is like degrading you are just making that person feel bad! And sometimes it’s not even that persons fault! Say you are comparing one child who is in Merlin to another child who is not in Merlin, if you say “See look! Other children are doing better then you!” when it's not their fault that there are not in Merlin! Another example is when you have 2 kids, one is top of their class, the other one is bottom of their class and has Dyslexia, for starters it is not their problem that they have Dyslexia, and you shouldn’t compare people! There is no use in comparing people except for making them feel bad. And if you want to compare things compare objects! They won’t get hurt like humans do...

Evidence in the book is that the woman never compared him to another person... and then the boy trusted her. But the lady, when she said, “Um-hum! You thought I was going to say, but didn’t you? You thought I was going to say, but I didn’t snatch people’s pocketbooks. Well I wasn’t going to say that...” the boy thought she was going to compare him against her at a young age, but she didn’t! And let me repeat, then the boy trusted her

My evidence is that Roger doesn’t do any act to show that he wants Mrs. Jones to feel sorry for him. He never ran when he got the chance and he always followed orders; he went to wash his face when Mrs. Jones told him to. But on the other hand, Mrs. Jones gave Roger 10 dollars to go buy suede shoes. That shows that Mrs. Jones might feel sorry for him.

Roger comes to trust Mrs. Jones when she tells and invites him to her house to wash his face. It was nice of her, and I think Roger started to trust Mrs. Jones then. Because it was so kind of her, Roger probably was thinking that Mrs. Jones was safe, and pretty much harmless. Some text evidence when Roger was about to wash his face is: ‘“Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose- at last. Roger looked at the door- looked at the woman- looked at the door- and went to the sink.’ That paragraph shows that instead of running, he decided to stay, and wash his face. That means, he basically gained Mrs. Jones trust! He knew Mrs. Jones must have been better than running, so he washed his face! And, when Roger asks; ‘“You gonna take me to jail?”’ and Mrs. Jones says she won’t, not with his dirty face. That probably relived Roger, plus it helped him trust Mrs. Jones even more. Also, at the end, it says; ‘“Good night! Behave yourself, boy!” she said, looking out into the street as he went down the steps. The boy wanted to say something other than, “Thank you, m’am,” to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but although his lips moved, he couldn’t say that as he turned at the foot of the barren stoop and looked up at the large woman in the door. Then she shut the door.’ I’m guessing there, Roger gained even more trust, because Mrs. Jones has practically been taking care of him for a night and has been so good for him. Also, she handed Roger $10 just to buy the shoes he wanted, blue suede shoes.

Satatya

Why it isn’t helpful

What If...

It isn’t helpful to be told that someone behaved better than you because first, if they just say that you would think, “Well what did they do better than me?” You should tell that person what the other person did to help them improve. If they know what they did, it’s not nice to make them feel bad like that, you should kindly explain what they did and tell them not to do it again.

Second, what if the person doesn’t know something. Say that a child starts to eat in a call with their mouth slightly open and didn’t know that was rude. Others who know would think its rude, and say that, “This other participant in the call behaved better than you! He didn’t eat, with his mouth open!” You should explain not to do it instead of degrading them for something they didn’t even know about. It wouldn’t be fair or helpful if you didn’t do that and criticized them for it. It’s like punishing a baby for breaking something.

Lastly, what if it was an accident? Say someone drops some glass on the floor by accident. You shouldn’t say, “He didn’t drop glass! He behaved much better than you!” You should realize that it was an accident and not say that to them.

Evidence

In the book, the lady doesn’t say, “I wanted things, but I never snatched other people's pocketbooks!” That would make Roger feel bad, and he would maybe run. Instead, she never compared, which made him like her a bit more.

In the book, it never says things like, “I know many boys and girls who ask for things, but they never steal pocketbooks! Be more like them!” If she said that, Roger would feel bad and not talk to her, maybe try to run.

Roger wasn’t told by the lady that he was worse than others, or any other comparison, but she was kind to him and didn’t compare him to others, making him feel better and not discouraged and bad.

Why it is helpful

If someone is bad and you say, “This person did something better,” then the person who did bad would be in an invisible competition and try to be better than the other person, making them both good.

Another reason I think Roger trusts Mrs. Jones is Mrs. Jones gave a kid she doesn’t know, which tried to steal her pocketbook some money!

The last reason I think Roger trusts Mrs. Jones is when Mrs. Jones took Roger to her house and she didn’t turn him over to the police.

The question I’m answering is, why did Roger come to trust Mrs. Jones? I think Roger came to trust Mrs. Jones because they had a connection. Mrs. Jones said that when she was young, she didn’t get things that she wanted, and I think they hand a connection and bonded. I think they started trusting when Mrs. Jones, and when she was going to wash his face. Roger asked if he was going to get taken into jail, Mrs. Jones said “Not with that face, I would take you nowhere.” That’s when he realized he wouldn’t go to jail and he trusted the woman. And she let him have food, even though he wasn’t hungry, and she trusted Roger because she didn’t look at her purse. And Roger asked if she needed anybody to buy milk or food.

Mrs. Jones teaches Roger right from wrong by being harsh on Roger and telling him what he should do.

First, I thought Roger learned his lesson because he didn’t steal Mrs. Jones’s pocketbook when Mrs. Jones left the pocketbook there, but at the end of the book, Roger didn’t even say thank you. Some part of Mrs. Jones’s teaching method was right, and some of it was wrong. I wouldn’t have been so harsh on Roger, but I wouldn’t be too nice with Roger by giving him food, taking him to my house, and giving him money for the blue suede shoes. All the harsh things Mrs. Jones did to Roger was canceled by all the good things Mrs. Jones did to Roger. I think that just tells him, “If I didn’t attempt stealing Mrs. Jones's pocketbook, I wouldn’t have been able to get money for the blue shoes. Next time, perhaps, when I attempt to steal other things, I will be rewarded too.”

Instead of being harsh and then being nice, I would just tell him sternly, “Don’t try to steal anyone's pocketbook ever again. If you need something, ask for it, or, earn it.” And then, I’ll just walk away.

I answered the question: Why does Roger come to trust Mrs. Jones?

When Mrs. Jones kicked Roger, I don’t think he trusted her, because he said he would turn lose if the woman released him. All the way to the walk to the hotel, I don’t think Roger was even starting to warm up to her because being in a headlock is not comfortable. I also think Roger was nervous because he is afraid that the woman will turn him over to the police. Then, when Mrs. Jones told Roger to wash his face, I think that he started to rust her because he was caring for him in a way. Then Roger starts to trust Mrs. Jones even more when she says that she won’t turn him over to the police. Slowly, his trust increases when she gives him food, and talks to him. In the part of the book when the woman says, ‘“Here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes”’, I think that is the part where Rogers trust is completely fulfilled.

In the book Thank you Ma’am a boy named Roger snatches a woman’s purse, (or pocketbook) the woman’s name is Luella Bates Washington Jones, or Mrs. Jones for short. This book is about what happens when Mrs. Jones catches Roger. This is an evaluative essay about the book, answering the question: Why does Roger come to trust Mrs. Jones?

Firstly, I believe that Roger starts to trust Mrs. Jones at this moment in the book:

Roger looked at the door ---looked at the woman---looked at the door--- and went to the sink. “Let the water run until it gets warm,” she said. “Here’s a clean towel.”

“You gonna take me to jail?” asked the boy, bending over the sink.

“Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere,” said the woman.

This is the moment that Roger finally realizes that Mrs. Jones is not going to turn him in to the police. I believe that this part of the book is where Roger starts to trust Mrs. Jones. He is not very sure that he can trust Mrs. Jones completely though. Secondly, I think his trust in Mrs. Jones increases in during this part:

She heated some lima beans and ham she had in the icebox, made the cocoa, and set the table. The woman did not ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his folks, or anything else that would embarrass him.

This is when Mrs. Jones made some food for herself and him. I think Roger’s trust in her increases because he realizes that she is helping him, he realizes that Mrs. Jones could have just kicked him, grabbed her purse and left him alone.

This is the part, when I think Roger’s trust had reached the max it could be:

When they were finished eating, she got up and said, “Now here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else’s---because shoes got by devilish ways will burn at your feet. I got to get my rest now. But from here on in, son, I hope you will behave yourself.”

This is the part where she gave Roger money to buy the blue suede shoes, that he really, really, wanted. These are three examples about how and when Roger comes to trust Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.
