If the earth were to randomly stop spinning all of a sudden the atmosphere would continue to turn and basically we will become like Jupiter's red eye. The atmosphere will still continue moving at around 1100 miles and hour and everything would be swept away but in this case the atmosphere might also be slowing down with the earth so something like this wont happen (not meaning it is not a possibility) . However in the book they do mention the fact that gravity is getting stronger so I think it will slowly get stronger and stronger over time. If this does happen we will either adapt to it or just be crushed under it's weight when it becomes strong enough. For non-environmental changes I think that people will start panicking (which they already are) and this will make life chaotic.
