They should be treated with respect and listened to, and it should be understood kids don't have the same understanding of impulse control, study habits, and time management that adults do. They're concerned about things that time has taught us are "silly," but they don't get that yet. That doesn't mean we shouldn't hold them accountable, but we should remember what it's like to be in their shoes. I'm still working on finding the right balance when it comes to connecting with students; having a positive relationship with students without becoming someone they only see as a friend. I really liked this part, "I am somebody. 
I was somebody when I came. 
I'll be a better somebody when I leave. 
I am powerful, and I am strong. 
I deserve the education that I get here. 
I have things to do, people to impress, and places to go". 
And they said " YEAH!"

Being good at everything isn't possible, so we should also emphasize that their weaknesses are important, too.
