I teach Chinese language and culture at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. We have been using Chinese Island in Second Life for language & culture classes since 2008. Over 1000 students have participated in lessons on the Island. I also created Virtual Arabia for Arabic language and culture with a colleague at Melbourne University in 2012. In 2013 I created Virtual Prato (VP) which re-creates a part of the real city of Prato where our university has an academic centre. VP is currently used to provide interactive orientation activities for students travelling to the real Prato for intensive study programs. In 2014 we received Australian Federal Government seed funding to create the Virtually Enhanced Languages (VEL) project. The aim of the project is to encourage more tertiary language and culture educators to try out task-based learning in 3D multi-user virtual environments (3D MUVEs). To reduce the barriers to entry we have re-created many of the resources on Chinese Island and are making them freely available for others to use.
