Because Minecraft is already such a popular platform that many students enjoy using, this edition of Minecraft could make learning exciting and memorable. This edition of Minecraft allows students to create famous historical locations and walk down the streets of these time periods. This would help students gain a better idea of what life might have been like during this time through visuals and experiences with building within these towns.

Many students may never get the chance to visit other countries or experience culture outside of the United States. Students with anxiety may feel overwhelmed at the prospect of venturing outside of their comfort zone while students with learning disabilities may find it difficult to comprehend other cultures without some personal experience. Virtual Reality allows these students to have simulated first-hand experiences with other cultures in a safe and controlled environment where they may feel more comfortable.

The Field Trips of the Future

Most college students can remember going on field trips throughout their education. However, it has become increasingly difficult for schools to take their students on field trips since the beginning of the pandemic. Virtual reality and augmented reality could serve as a way for students to go on field trips with the rest of the class. If a class had originally planned to take their students to meet with a beekeeper or travel to the Grand Canyon, students can still have these experiences through Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technology.

Developing Schema through AR & VR

The most important part about a student's first few years in an academic setting is the development of schema. This refers to a student's ability to understand and conceptualize content based on previous experiences. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality could be used to create experiences where students are able to develop schema. For example, if students have not had experience with cows or cannot visualize snowy weather in places were cows and snow are not common, this technology can be used to give students the simulation of seeing a cow or seeing snow for the first time.

One of the most common reasons that students do not enjoy reading is the difficulty of reading comprehension, especially for students who's first language is not English and students who have disabilities. By using Augmented Reality technology, students are provided with videos, audio, websites, definitions, and other resources which can enhance their reading experience. Augmented Reality technology can make reading more interesting for students, help students develop skills needed to comprehend what they are reading, and provide additional information to engage with deeper thinking.
