Virreina square is found in Gracia district Barcelona, very beautiful area of the city with historical monuments and peaceful square, ideal setting for taking a drink at one of its café terraces. This is one of the warmest squares in the city, a favorite place for craft markets, musical events, open-air cinema in summer, and before the pandemic, swing dance events every Sunday Morning.

Many local residents still call it Plaça de Sant Joan, after the church that was built there in 1884.

The architect Josep Artigas in 1878 makes many works in this square and the Sant Joan church, is from that period. The temple suffered a fire in 1909, and complete devastation in 1936, then it was completely rebuilt in 1948. Inside the church, a singular aspect that must be mentioned is the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, the work of the architect disciple of Antoni Gaudí, Francesc Berenguer.

Another interesting monument located in this square is the bronze statue representing “Rut or also known as the Espigoladora”. The bronze work was inaugurated on September 11, 1949 and carried out by the artist Josep M.Camps Arnau.

The statue represents the biblical character Ruth, a symbol of fidelity, she is also known as the Gleaner since, as can be seen in the images, she carries a bunch of wheat ears in her hands.

with my classmates we decided to select this place in Gracia because is one of the most enchanting areas of the city, pretty and fairytale, where I feel the time is stop and you can have very quiet moment alone or in company. My personal experience when I visit for first time this square was magical I had an immediately feeling with many Lindy hopper dancer there and very good jazz music in direct, than I decided to begin this Lindy hopper adventure.

We discovered La Plaça del Diamant walking through the neighborhood of Vila de Gràcia. This place reminded us of the writer Mercè Rodoreda, her famous book “La Plaça del Diamant” and the film “La Colometa” which is based on her novel and was filmed in this square.

The square is a quiet place where people shop at the
different stores and meet on the bars’ terraces. Sometimes, you can also see groups of students visiting the bomb shelter that the neighbors built during the Spanish civil war.

This square is famous because here, Mercè Rodoreda was
inspired to write the novel “La Plaça del Diamant”. As a tribute to her, there is a commemorative plaque in the square. There is also a bronze sculpture of “Colometa” which represents the novel’s protagonist and her doves and is a
tribute to the novel.

This square was built in 1860 by the jeweler José
Rosell, for this reason it is named after a precious stone, the diamond or “Diamant”. Around the square, there are also many streets with precious stones’ names, like Perla (Pearl), Or (Gold), Topazi (Topaz) or Rubí (Ruby).

We chose to write about this square because it
commemorates the writer Mercè Rodoreda i Gurgui. She is one of the most important Spanish post-war writers and we like her novels.
