They are conditioned and are sleep learning to increase human achievement. They use hypnopedia to manipulate everyone's core beliefs to not create any conflicts between them and so everyone is conditioned to act the same.  Soma is used to make them happy and focused because they are conditioned to be and if you are not they will teach you to take soma.

We can see that In brave new world individuality is incompatible with happiness and social stability because it interferes with the smooth functioning of the community. The Controllers do everything they can to prevent people developing individual identities. Within both worlds, there are "continents" that are filled with that world's most prominent characters/characteristics. Through differing color schemes to adjectives that highlight the disparity between Brave New World and the Reservation, it is clear that throughout the book John does not belong to either society. This notion is amplified in our diagram with the figure in the middle having a question mark cover the entirety of his face. This figure represents John's inability to discover who he is. The main objective is to gain as much soma as possible from the start ("Decanted") to finish ("Death"). The seeming pointlessness of menially rolling the dice to advance towards death, as well as the aimless random collection of something with little real value or influence on the gameplay (soma) highlights the characteristics of Brave New World's society. In Brave New World, those who strictly obey society's norms follow near meaningless lives with very little valuable life experiences, quite similar to Somafied. THe player, as those in BNW, accumulate soma as a reward. I made this document on what I think would be key ingredients in Soma. I listed different narcotics since I think Soma in BNW puts people in a slower state of mind. I also listed a stimulant since it is shown in the book that people take Soma just to be happy and to do certain things. It was also a group of Bokanovsky twins in a helicopter that caught John punishing himself and word got out. Then a Feely was made about him (The helicopter represent that. In the novel it was a car, but in the graphic novel it was a helicopter). The third time he said it was right after Linda’s death. When two groups of identical deltas was visiting the ward. This time, he felt the words mocking him. He began a riot. Soma is a type of drug that everyone takes in the novel. The drug increases your happiness and puts you at ease when feeling uneasy. In large doses, soma gives a hallucinatory effect with which the characters in the book call it a "soma holiday." The saying on the poster, "a gramme is better than a damn," was said by Lenina. This quote basically implies that it's better to take soma and be happy than to feel any negative emotions like sadness or anger. I put a galactic image inside the pill to represent the soma holiday that would take you out of this world. This is also why I crossed out identity in the states motto, considering that the society of brave new world discouraged true identity, using soma to break people into submission. By personifying soma, to show how it is used to influence and change people, specifically in there actions and behavior.
