Utah Culture

I was raised in Utah, and the culture of Utah is a big part of who I am. I was raised in the LDS faith, and even though I am no longer a member, it still has a lasting influence. I still value teachings from the church such as the morals regarding family values, community spirit, and not judging others.
The Mormon faith has a large influence on Utah culture, but Utah culture is so much more. One of the biggest influences of Utah culture is The Great Outdoors. I love camping and hiking and have been to all of Utah's national parks. The beauty of Utah is breathtaking, and I am grateful to have grown up here surrounded by the mountains. Anytime I need a pick me up or grounding I head up the canyon.

Culture of Caring

Caring for others and being a caring person is very important to me and a big part of who I am. For the last 16 years I have worked in care-taking fields. I worked as a direct support staff, manager, and job coach, among others, working with people living with a disability. I currently work as a Registered Behavior Technician and a caretaker for elderly. My work has helped put me on a path to become a social worker. Within my work I have learned to communicate in many different ways and to understand verbal and nonverbal forms of communication. What I have also learned is that our society lacks cultural competence, caring, and tolerance. I hope to help influence change and awareness of a culture of caring.

I grew up in a farming community, and we always had a garden. It's always been a part of me. When I moved into my apartment, I didn't have space in a yard for a garden, so I started raising indoor plants. Gardening is something very meditative for me, and I have been able to keep it going with my indoor plant sanctuary including over 25 plants. They are helpful to mental well-being, as well as being very healing and therapeutic. It's so exciting to see a plant grow and sprout babies, and know that I was a part of growing new plant life.
