The lesson that the reader learns from Kino's story is that not everything is what you think or believe. In the story, Kino thought the pearl would bring wealth and hope for him and his family, but towards the end of the story, Kino realized that the pearl is actually evil and bringing danger to his family. the pearl has changed Kino into a totally different person. We can apply this lesson to a modern-day audience by showing people that you shouldn't believe everything you see.

Irony in The Pearl

There is Dramatic Irony in chapter 2, The Pearl. Juana assumed that modern medicine would heal Coyotito's scar, however, Juana healed his scar with her homemade poultice. Poultice is a soft material that is used to help soreness, on wounds. the reader knew the poultice healed Coyotito's scar, but Kino's family assumed they got good luck from finding the Pearl. ----------------------------------------------------------- There is also dramatic irony in chapter 4, The Pearl. Kino brought in his massive pearl and knew the Pearl was worth a lot. The first pearl buyer Kino met was balancing a coin on his hand easily, however, when he saw the Pearl, he immediately couldn't balance the coin. The coin fell into his lap and that showed the reader how shook the Pearl buyer was, even if Kino didn't know.

Brave, Strong, A Fighter, Kind, Caring, and Supportive.

CHANGES:

At the beginning she seems very timid and doesn't talk much and follows her husband and towards the end she is braver and lets her voice too be heard and becomes stronger.

CHARACTERISTICS:

Male, Strong, Positive( Thinks he can do anything), and Loves his family.

CHANGES:

At the beginning of the story he was a very normal man and towards the end he was very cautious and he was scared but really greedy.

Plot

EXPOSITION:

at the beginning of the story it describes Kino waking up in a Brush house and it describes him waking up on a mat next to his wife Juana, and his baby Coyotito on a swing bed.

HOOK:

Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion and they have to get the doctor but he dosen't want to treat him because they don't have money and when they go look for a pearl to sell and they find the pearl of the world.

RISING ACTION AND CLIMAX:

Then everyone finds out but they get attacked and they want to sell it fast but they are followed and they have to attack or be killed by them.

FALLING ACTION AND EXPOSITION:

Kino attacks them and kills them but in the fight one of the guys shoots Coyotito and kills him and they return to the village and throw the pearl back into the ocean because it has only brought them bad luck.

Symbolism

The song of Kino's family symbolizes his identity and the song is a source of strength and comfort. Coyotito symbolizes innocence and purity within the family. The pearl represents greed and violence as it appeared throughout the story. These are multiple examples of symbolism, throughout The Pearl.

Conflict

Internal Conflict

Kino deals with Man vs. Self internal conflict, when he was plotting to kill the mountain hunters, after fleeing the scene of his burnt down brush house. Kino was battling potentially getting killed or killing people he didn't even know, to save his family.

External Conflict

Kino also deals with Man vs. Society, when his entire town turns against him to steal his pearl. The doctor made Coyotito more sick than he was. The pearl dealers tried to scam Kino. Someone even burned down Kino's brush house. These people used to like Kino and his family until they wanted the Pearl. Those are two types of conflict within The Pearl.
