• What did you learn about a character or group of people that you have not personally experienced?

  I have shared the experience of being resilient toward something that affected me negatively, for Jeannette it was fire and for me it was ducks. I was once attacked by a duck and that scared me for a while, I eventually built the courage to come close to ducks again. My family is similar in the manner of always being there for each other. I have learned that some families struggle to tell the truth to each other and always come up with more lies to cover up on parts that they lack. For example Rex does this multiple times.

Family : In the book the glass castle, family is a big reason that Jeannette is able to look for the brightness in every outcome. Even when the struggles such as money and living conditions approach this bonded family, they tend to help each other get through their troubles. When Jeannette is jumped by a group of Mexican girls her brother rises to the occasion and fends them off for a while allowing for his sister to be safe. The caring actions of their don't go unnoticed by Jeannette as she remembers this much further down the road.

• When in the car, our main character Jeannette is sent out of the car and slides some ways across gravel. In this odd event she is filled with shock and I think the panic overwhelmed her more than she could feel the pain.

• Why did this quote stand out to you? : This quote stood out to me because of the harsh truth that sometimes physically hurts Jeannette, she is living life in a harsh manner. She seems to be so blinded by the love her parents give her, she can't see that they are struggling to survive financially.

12. I want to know how the door of the Green Caboose opened, was it because she slept on the door and accidentally opened it, or was the door not closed all the way because it was cheap? Also why did they switch cars.

    1. When Jeannette comes back after she got burned, she decides to "face down (her) enemy" (the fire) with a candle flame that she ran her finger through. At a young age we see that she has a resilient mindset and does not easily drift away from things. Another example of this is in the beginning of the story when Jeannette is finally financially stable while her is still struggling with money. This is part of the future which shows that she never gave up on her parents.

    2. The emotions this book has evoked on me so far have been the feeling of just bland optimistic thoughts of a child. While they do live in the middle of nowhere on occasion, often going from town to town they tend to flee from these areas for bad reasons. Jeannette has been looking to only the best outcomes of her downfalls, she is burned by fire and does not let that accident keep her away from the thing that burned her.

Readers if different ages might interpret the memoir differently because a young child who heres about a story of children doing whatever they want and having all this freedom to make their own decisions and with out consequences may sound good to them. However an adult hering about unsupervised children may seem like a nightmare because they know most children make poor decisions without guidance.

4. The original audience that was intended for this memoir was the young adolescent youth who are growing up to realize the significance of having guidance in life and when making decisions. More importantly, a role model who displays characteristics unlike the ones we see in the book, the consequences are evident in the living situations of the Walls family. I find myself being in a similar view to the audience, picturing my thoughts of what I would do in their situation and how my decisions would very compared to the ones in this memoir.

   
   

Jeannette has started to compare herself to those of her age around her in school, she notices that they live a different life compared to the one she lives. She finds herself to struggle with balance the normal behavior of a regular child in a stable home, versus the chaotic and sloppy household of hers. The living situation has become more real to Jeannette as she sees what other children her ages expect as to be normal, they have things that are a luxury to her.

This quote really exposes the stigma of the Walls lifestyle in a very eye catching manner, by comparing both the expectations for a regular child and the reality of jeannette’s youth.
