Maël originates from Celtic roots in Bretagne France, a region in the north west area of the country. It first appeared in the 5th century, man Saint Maël from France who lived in Wales. Maël’s meaning is chief or prince. My parents chose my name because they have always liked the sound of it. Also my mom’s dad was from Bretagne. My name reminds me of my grandpa who passed away because he was from the area where it originated and he was part of the reason I was named Maël. I love the way my name sounds when said properly however many of my friends that aren’t French can not pronounce my name so it does sound weird to hear my name differently then I say it. However this doesn’t change that I really appreciate my name and my parent for choosing it. My feelings about my name have mostly stayed the same however in 5th grade my teacher told me to change my name because of the pronunciation, this made me feel hurt and it made me detest my name for a short while. My name is special to me because I have a unique name that many people have never heard before they met me.
