This idea of the nine lives causeway can be linked to religious ideology as the causeway could be seen as the travel between heaven and hell. Eel Marsh House being Arthur hell where he is haunted and harassed by the supernatural whereas on the other hand Crythin Gifford being his heaven where he goes to escape the haunting of Eel Marsh House. The causeway would be the journey between heaven and hell.
