"Nine Lives Causeway"

the name the nine lives causeway could imply death and the supernatural as the it could suggest you need nine lives yet we only have one. This idea of the nine lives causeway can be linked to religious ideology as the causeway could be seen as the travel between heaven and hell. Eel Marsh House being Arthur hell where he is haunted and harassed by the supernatural whereas on the other hand Crythin Gifford being his heaven where he goes to escape the haunting of Eel Marsh House. The causeway would be the journey between heaven and hell. The causeway is evocative of the idea that it is secluded and isolates that you can't leave.

"cradling spider in my arms like a child"

The idea that Arthur treats Spider as his child shows that he has achieved a emotional relationship with the dog and shows care and emotion. The could also imply motherhood as to cradle a child is something that is very mother like. This idea of a male being mothering subverted social expectations at the time the novel was set as during this period of time woman were seen as delicate and caring the looked after the children and the men worked this subjects it as men weren't viewed as caring and mothering.
