SOLO describes how a learner’s performance grows in complexity when mastering tasks. Therefore, it is usually used for assessing the learners' understanding. However, it can be used for designing and planning the curriculum in terms of the learning outcomes intended, which is helpful in implementing constructive alignment . Constructive alignment is very similar to Backward design.

How can SOLO support learning and teaching in PYP?

SOLO Taxonomy can be closely related to ATLs, especially thinking skills. It helps developing the skills and dispositions for transdisciplinary learning. It is easily linked to students' skills and teachers capabilities

It can also be used for establishing conceptual understanding. The structure of the SOLO model can plan the learning transcendence from topics to concepts.

It might also be beneficial and handy for collaborative planning. Teachers can identify the possible levels of understanding that students will develop at the end of the unit. Integrating subjects and specialists (PE, Art, Music, etc) is also possible. Students can use it as a planning too such as the Exhibition.

Moreover, SOLO Taxonomy model can be used as an assessment tool as it is originally meant for. It is compatible with the PYP assessment strategies.
