The main markets you would focus on are ready to wear and high street fashion. A fashion designer may work to their own brief or given a brief to work towards. Then develop a product from this. You have to visualise and create ideas by making a sketch by hand or aided computer design. They keep up to date with latest fashion trends. Experienced fashion designers with larger companies may focus more on the design aspect, with pattern cutters and machinists preparing sample garments. In smaller companies these, and other tasks, may be part of the fashion designer’s role.

The head of design usually run an entire department of fashion designers. You will need to have good art skills , leadership and communication traits as well. They design clothes , shoes and accessories. Some design one expensive piece or produced fashion in a particular area. For a designer you would need to produce sketches by hand or computer , developing patterns and analysing trends in fabrics , colours and shapes. Sometimes designers work longer hours as they will have to prepare samples for buyers and fashion shows. Fashion Designers usually work in a workshop or a studio. They attend fashion shows ,visit clients and travel often. 
The requirements to be a fashion designer would be being creative, have an eye for colour , texture and pattern, garment construction and enjoy following fashion trends.
