General John J. Pershing served as the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) on the Western Front in World War I, from 1917–1918. Commanding and preparing over two million men for battle was no easy feat. Pershing had to build an army from the ground up.
John J. Pershing graduated in 1886 from the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., as senior cadet captain. This is the highest honor received upon graduation.
Pershing took part in the New Mexico and Arizona Apache campaigns in 1886-1890. From 1891-1895 he was a military instructor at the University of Nebraska. Later becoming a tactics instructor at West Point. He served in the Philippines, with various commands, along with various state side posts. Consistently picking up rank throughout the years. All of this lead Pershing to become the greatest commander of the American military in WWI.

Prior to this he had many victories against the Apaches and Indian soldiers of the west. He was victorious in the Philippines as well as the Spanish American War. He even received a Silver Star, the third-highest personal decoration for valor in combat.

Pershing failed in his capture of Poncho Villa. He spent nearly two years trying to capture the Mexican revolutionary general but failed. The Meuse-Argonne offensive of September 26, 1918, proved to be another failure for Pershing. He severely underestimated the abilities of a machine gun on the western front and caused soldiers to falter. Pershing then handed over command to Hunter Liggett and admitted to tactical failure. Some historians would say that the Meuse-Argonne offensive was the biggest failure of Pershing's military career. This blunder led to 350,000 casualties and is known as the deadliest battle in American history.

Analysis: Why Studying The Leader Is Important Today

Studying leaders of the past has allowed us to review characteristics of great military commanders. This in return has given us the ability to shape the men and women that lead our troops. These historic leaders have already lived out the scenarios and situations and the intelligence we are able to gather from them has given our military commanders the knowledge of how to handle these issues.
Motivated military leadership from years ago has the same values, concepts and virtues that motivate our troops today. These leaders of the past, whether great or not, have valuable lessons to teach future generations of leaders to come. It's an invaluable lesson to have their wisdom.
- "It takes a wise man to learn from his mistakes, but an even wiser man to learn from others."- Zen Proverb.

John J. Pershing wielded power that no other general in American history has ever held. The AEF (American Expeditionary Force) was shaped as Pershing saw fit. Pershing's doctrine "open warfare" consisted of bringing the enemy out of the trenches and into the open with marksmanship, maneuver, and mass numbers to win the war. His confidence and wisdom during World War I earned him the title of great commander.

Jacob - this is one of the better Padlets that I have viewed on this topic. You chose a good layout, provided the right amount of information, and mixed in some pics and quotes. You could have added a link or two or even a video clip just as easy...but clearly, you understand here what Padlet can provide.

Indeed, Pershing was not a nice man and was often rigid in his leadership methods. A less determined commander likely would have not been able to withstand the British and the French...but the determination comes at a cost: lack of empathy and flexibility, which resulted in some painful battlefield lessons.

"Genius" normally comes with a cost somewhere else in the personality!
