The Philippines is known for a lot of things such as art, culture, tourism etc. but it is mostly famous for its pop culture which is known as Original Pilipino Music or OPM. OPM is a music genre that integrates the culture, pride and nationality of the Philippines. It represents the country’s creativity and uniqueness. OPM has became a source of comfort for some Filipinos and for some has been an inspiration to get through things in their daily lives. Some examples of these OPM would be “Anak” by Freddie Aguilar and “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” by Rey Valera. These songs have shaped the music industry in the Philippines and at the same time resonated with the citizen’s experiences, emotions and ideals of the Filipinos

To conclude, OPM is an important part in our country’s history as it shapes not only public opinion and discourse but also the ideas and mindsets of Filipino citizens. This concept aligns with the Agenda Setting Theory. The Agenda Setting Theory states that media tends to influence viewers and listeners creating a hierarchy of news prevalences. OPMs and their artists usually make use of their songs to address social issues and heavy topics, bringing these topics to the face of the public’s consciousness, opening their eyes and making them realize the truth and importance. By choosing to highlight these issues, these artists have set the agenda for public discussion and controversy, influencing people about the importance of these issues to be addressed. Examples would be songs of love and heartbreak tend to influence the society’s perspective about love and romance or a romantic relationship in general. On the other hand, songs that address social issues tend to raise awareness and stimulate discussion on solution or spreading awareness. Therefore, OPM does not only serve as a source of entertainment and comfort but also a tool for social change and discourse

With the use of Gratifications Theory, OPM can be argued as something that Filipinos actively listen to, seek out or even look for to satisfy specific needs. This theory states that people will find alternatives such as media and music to satisfy specific wants or even needs. In this case, this theory applies to OPM as people tend to listen to this genre to grab a sense of nationalism, to support national identity, Filipino pride, emotional expression or just simply entertainment. OPM serves a catalyst for hope and inspiration to Filipinos. It can also be a platform or safe place where Filipinos can freely express their emotions, ideas, identities and experiences in a creative and comforting way. OPM may also serve as a source comfort or connection to others, which helps us Filipinos gain a sense of belonging and being able to understand one another through shared experiences, emotions and even interests that are encapsulated within the meaning of the music
