My dream is to study medicine and become an oncology surgeon. From a very young age I lived in a very caring environment due to my parents’ caring for my grandmothers and grandfathers, which is really a quite major reason why I want to be a doctor. I always look up to my parents.

Some of my hobbies:

Baking

Crocheting

Painting

Listen to music

I arrived at about 10pm in the Heathrow Airport in London and I took a taxi from there to Brighton which took approximately 2 hours. When I arrived at the hotel with my parents we were trying to take our luggage from the car to the hotel but then surprisingly there was no porter working at that time. So, we were told to do it ourselves. It was really hard for us to take our luggage because it was so windy but we managed to get our bags to the hotel. I’ve had about few days before the orientation week so I explored in Brighton and enjoyed walking around the city.

To become a successful student it requires commitment, dedication, passion, time management, productivity, work hard because nothing comes easily, being consistent with the hard work, not giving up and always trying again and again, focusing only on yourself because no one will benefit you if you focus on others especially when you focus on other things like looking at other’s success and comparing them to yourself because you will loose focusing on yourself. Also, don’t let anyone on your way to distract you from being successful. Moreover, always put yourself first in everything and this way you’ll always focus on yourself which leads to achieve a successful goal.

There are many things that you could do to help you become a successful student, such as: doing a to-do list, calendar, time table, or using any other apps to organize everything, focus in class, being productive and avoiding procrastination by having commitment and dedication to finish this course and proceed in medicine successfully, building connections with students and people inside the university and outside the university.

Then I went ahead and attempted a self-assessment quiz about self developing plans for my future career and it can link my studies to my future career goals. It is significant to build relationships with other professional and display emotional intelligence in the workplace. From looking at the types of the professional networks, the most professional network I feel like I would actually enjoy is the Health Science Professional Network because its relevant to what I’m studying and I’m very interested in learning more in biology it is a fascinating subject.

During the Life and Career Skills Week, I’ve met new people/teachers while I was planning and writing my story. On the first day of LACSA, my the teacher taught us several ways of telling a story and I was inspired of the ways of telling a stories, such as paintings, filming, creating music/sounds, digital pictures, and many other creative ways of storytelling. I was able to share and listen to others thoughts and opinions on how to tell a story and which structure is more interesting, to me the second way when a story opens in medias res opens in the middle of plot. Then I’ve decided to tell my story about my journey moving in to Brighton with pictures and a small caption for each stage in my journey. I used Canva to do my storytelling and then I submitted and uploaded it in padlet. After I submitted it, I presented my story to the class. And I listened to many wonderful and creative stories of my classmate. Also, I had chemistry classes because Adam cancelled the classes the week after LACSA week so he moved the classes 1 week earlier which is in this week. Also, I attended to the extra support class for chemistry which helped me practice and understand more, it was really helpful.

Academic integrity is one of the significant values that makes a student successful. It means to show honesty in your studies. So basically, it’s doing the opposite of cheating, plagiarizing, and being dishonest. During the class we discussed what is academic integrity and how important it is after Adam presented the powerpoint to the class and gave examples of it. After that, we did a quiz then shared our answers to the class and discussed why is the situation true/false.

Time management is crucial to being a successful student and in achieving your goals. Without time management, you won’t be able to keep up with your work and it’ll be extremely stressful for you to finish everything to reach your goals. You can avoid procrastination by organizing your time/tasks with a schedule, to-do list, a chart, calendar, reminder apps, writing all of your deadlines on a paper or a calendar, a planner. Choose a way to organize your time and stick to it meaning keep your schedule or whatever type of organizing tool you chose updated and be consistent so you keep up with the deadlines and important dates. Always start doing your task (assignment) early as much as you could to prevent doing things in the last minute and to prevent from burning out. Also, you can award yourself with anything you want even if it was something very simple but this is very important because this will give you energy, motivation, and excitement that you would definitely be proud of yourself after achieving one of your goals.

This session helped me understand more how to achieve academic success, progress to university, Personal development, independent learning, and knowledge/skills development.

Reflect on how to reach to reframe positivity

There was a video that was played on class about positivity and how to re-frame your thoughts and this helped me in reflecting on this session. I was interesting on how other students in my class have a different approach of staying positive.

Positive mindset practices:

diary/gratitude journal

Stop complaining

Reframing a situation with a different response using empathy

Behavior=communication

Distraction with positive experience like a hobby/bath/walk

Meditate (and it could’ve been better)

Forgiveness (you don’t know what are people going through, so forgive them to whatever they did)

The following things above are things that you can do to stay positive. I always try to re-frame my thoughts into saying that I’m grateful and thankful for what happen because who knows maybe it would’ve been worse and I always try to figure something out on doing a plan b or trying to solve the problem in another way and instead of giving up right away and just complain about it. Complaining, won’t take you anywhere that good for you if you think that this is what you should do when you’re in a difficult situation or having a problem. In addition, taking a break would benefit you from burning out. Your behavior and attitude is key to staying positive, as I said if you’re a person that complains the whole day even on like small things, you’re never going to be positive and this requires you to change. People oftenly believe that change is scary and not good but in reality most of the time change isn’t a bad thing because us as humans we all have mistakes and we’re not perfect at all. However, change gives you the opportunity to improve yourself in everything that leads to the best version of yourself that you build throughout your journey by learning from your mistakes and learning how to become positive even if you’re under pressure.

Empathy: Respect & Kindness

Bullying is when a person or group is hurting of one person or group where the relationship involves an imbalance of power, and it can be physical, verbal, or psychological. This can be online or face to face. Katie shared her story that inspired me because it showed me that even though these kind of people that bullied her at school she decided to hold her head up and ignore them and did not give them any response. This show that she choices respect and this indicates that you stand by your values holding on to your own boundaries and re-phrase it with saying that “I wonder why that is?” To whatever disrespectful and mean phrases. This inspires me to alway keep my head up and ignore all the disrespectful people that I meet in my daily life and in the future throughout my journey of studying medicine in the UK, and not change any of my values and attitude.

The words/part that spoke to me the most is the fourth stanza of the “Choose Respect Poem”, because it shows that choosing to respect the disrespectful is mature and shows that you are holding on to your boundaries and values and not making the disrespectful people bring you down and make them feel powerful.
How to Cope with Stress?

During the class, we had an activity where each pair of students gets a pink sticky note that I and the person next to me discussed and wrote stressful things that commonly happen in a student’s life, which are the following:

Deadlines

Exams

Preparing for a medicine interview

UCAS application/having a plan B

Timetable, to-do list, calendar, etc.

Time management (like catching the train, keeping up with everything!!!)

Lack of sleep

After that everyone put their sticky notes with their answers on the whiteboard and discussed most of them with the class. On the other half of the whiteboard Katie wrote “how to cope with stress?”, and she put us in groups of 5 to discuss with the group about this and each person should write answers separately because everyone has different ways of coping with stress. The things that I wrote were:

doing a hobby

Go for a walk or exercise

Meditation

Pray

Go out and have fun alone/with friends/family

Read something you like

Watch a tv show, movie, or anything you enjoy watching like youtube videos

Listening to a podcast

Telling yourself to start instead of actually think of it and stress about it

This is what I try to do when I’m stressed because if I don’t do one of these thing I would probably burn out and not keep up and eventually feel drained from all of the stress without having a break or a way to cope with stress. A very nice way of coping with stress is writing it down which is the thing that is stressing me, then writing most of the ways of solving a problem or completing a task, moreover, when you write it down on a piece of paper just start and when you start its definitely going to make you feel better because starting is the most challenging step but at the same time once you’ve started you’ll definitely achieve your goal/task that you’re aiming. Thats what Katie discussed in the class and I was really inspired by it. Afterwards, the next activity was meditation, and we had a 5 minute session of meditation that Katie arranged with her phone in an app. I was so calm and relieved after doing a little bit of meditation. As you can see, it doesn’t matter how long it is, even a 5 minute session makes a huge difference! This is also connected with your thoughts and your thoughts should be positive. So, always remember to reframe your thoughts to avoid stress! Your thoughts control how you feel and change your mood, so, when you be positive or even turn something negative or bad that is happening always remember that your lucky, be grateful and thankful for you have because not everyone have what you have.

At the same time I need to prepare myself for the mock interview but I didn’t have time but at least our last class with Rebecca she gave us some practice interview questions that I think really helped with my performance in the mock interview.
Reflection of LACSA Week

The LACSA week was quit interesting and I really had a great time enjoying the activities. Scavenger hunt, escape room, and sharing cultural food that I surprisingly enjoyed and had fun because I worked with different people. I’ve met many other students with different majors that I had conversation with about the holiday and their major. The escape room activity was a bit difficult it took me and my group some time to find all of the clues. At first it was easy but then it was challenging finding the last 4 clues and one of the clues required us to insert numbers/letters in a specific lock machine to unlock it and the to find the clues in order there were sign for the clues like arrows on walls on specific places in the Watts building. We walked through all of the room in the ground, first, second, and thirds floor. I have explored rooms and doors I haven’t known from before. I had to communicate and use some skills like teamwork which are kind of related to each other because I communicated with the members of my group and at the same time and had teamwork by splitting the work to each member in the group so everyone takes the responsibility in doing something and taking a part of the game. So, we can solve the mystery and become faster. In this way everyone brought something useful to solve the mystery. This was very useful and I enjoyed participating in the this activity and the scavenger hunt activity that was very similar to this one. However, I enjoyed scavenger hunt the most and it was my favorite activity. This activity required use to find clues in the Lanes of Brighton that we started from the station of Brighton and the clues took us to all of the streets and places of Brighton and brought us back again to the station of Brighton where we found the last clue which was a 3 digit numbers and we ended right there. It took us about 4 hours to finish it and also we took a break during the activity because it was very very long but also fun and adventurous. Finally the last day of LACSA was sharing food inspired from your culture. I brought mini cupcakes called “gurs egaly”, this is how you would pronounce it but it won’t be the same in Arabic because the name of this dessert has Arabic letters that are not easy to pronounce. These mini cupcakes have saffron, cardamom, and a bit of orange extract that brings out the unique flavor. Overall, it was a great experience and I have learned a lot from the LACSA week.

Communication in Career Source

From reading the 6.1 Communication in Career Source, I learned that communication is beneficial to everyone, especially, for me it is very important to have communication skills and the ability to communicate with different people and knowing how to respond based on the situation you’re in and the how the person responds to you. As a communicator, you should be able to be good in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Without these you won’t be a successful communicator. Also there are many advantages that you can gain from being a one. You will have clarity, productivity, gratification, persuasion, and negotiation. Also, you need to have body language to show the listener or the person you’re taking to, to be able to understand you clearly. To improve my communication skill there is a non-profit organization called Toastmasters International. They help the speakers to build their confidence to have effective communication. In the club the evaluators will give a feedback and positive suggestions to encourage the speaker and help them improve their skills for the activity that requires communication. Moreover, there is a strategy that is mentioned called SV COACH Approach which stands for story, voice, clear and concise, own it, audience, comfort, and lastly humor. These points will help you in enhancing your communication skills. This is very useful.

SV COACH Approach

A leader is a person that is capable of having several leadership skills like: communication (listening, speaking), confidence, collaborate (willing to), responsible and give a good example, sound decision-making, team-building/teamwork, problem solving, empathy, adaptability, time-management, and inspiration. First thing that we did in the class was completing a survey and wrote my understanding of employability without looking at the definition. This is nice because it shows my understanding. The leader should not be arrogant and should never give up. Also mentioned in the video “feel the fear and do it anyway!” I think these skills are very important for a leader to become successful in achieving the leadership skills. Also, being a leader will add into you CV and benefit you and give you more opportunity to have more jobs, gain advancement in their careers, earn higher incomes than people with less leadership experience, have more occupational choices from which to choose, influence others, and lastly make a difference in other people’s lives, helping them to pursue their dreams. This video showed me how important it is and also leaders should be humble and not bias.

How am I getting on?

What have I improved in?

Am I using the material in class to improve?

What do I need to do now?

This module has been very helpful in improving my english especially for writing and that also benefited me for preparing for the MMI interview and made me speak more fluently. During this class Sharon helped me to address the mistakes that I was doing in writing the essay by writing a new essay and analyzing it. After Sharon graded my essay I figured out that most of my mistakes were writing a lot with unclear structure so I needed to improve my writing by practicing and learning on how to write an essay with a clear structure that includes: introduction paragraph, argument 1 paragraph, Counter-argument, refutation, and conclusion paragraph. After addressing my mistakes, the teacher then gave us an example of a good essay with phrases that could improve the essay and make it clear for the reader. Furthermore, Sharon gave us some activities during the class between each writing essay that were doing in order to improve our writing and make sure that were right on track. This gave me the opportunity to not repeat my mistakes and notice any further mistakes that I would make during writing an essay and some of my common mistakes are: repetition, writing too much, unclear structure.

Academic Exploration

You & honesty

One of my coworkers suggested copying answers from the internet to save time on a group assignment. I didn't agree but didn't want to argue, therefore my honesty was questioned. At last, I suggested we do the job ourselves, even if it took longer. I feel that I worked honourably since I followed the rules and my values. I would be more comfortable speaking out immediately and explaining why honesty is important for group trust, personal growth, and grades.

Further reflection

Honesty encourages free expression, learning from mistakes, and support. Honesty generates respect and progress in collaborative settings. Being honest in college builds trust with professors and classmates. It ensures grades reflect your work and education. Academic integrity creates lifetime honesty and responsibility. I could be more honest by admitting my mistakes, asking for help when I don't understand, and taking full responsibility for my actions, even if it's uncomfortable.

Academic Exploration Reflection

Write a brief summary of how you have achieved these skills.

I arrange and manage deadlines using a planner and remember my calendar and essential academic dates. I found the sports centre and library on my prospective university's campus online. Chapter 2: University Readiness taught me how to manage my homework, seek support, and adjust to university. Transition workshops on school life and academic expectations prepared me. I completed the Kindness Curriculum Honesty program, which reinforced academic integrity, and I know plagiarism and academic misconduct rules.

Write a brief summary of how you have achieved these skills.

I learnt essential academic skills by learning how to do fundamental research using reliable resources like academic journals. I now understand how to differentiate between peer-reviewed, evidence-based academic sources and popular, less formal, unreliable ones. I learnt time management, note arrangement, and test preparation from Chapter 5.4's Study Skills. By practicing essays especially in extended project and receiving tutor comments, I've improved my academic writing skills. Finishing Chapter 5.2's Critical Thinking part enabled me to examine arguments, challenge information, and support my assertions.
