This quote shows how in the beginning of the book the mom was keeping her kids exited. After her 16 year old son starts shooting a people with guns she starts to lose it as everything after that gets worse. Especially when Miles say "so, are family doesn't do guns?" in a very sarcastic voice. His mother looks at him and softly says "I hate these times". I can see why she is so upset because when they left the amazing house they lived in she tried to keep the family positive, but once they spent $92 for Mcdonald's and got into the middle of the wilderness with harmful motercycle gangs she starts to lose it.

Book Review

Gr. 7-10. The post-apocalyptic future has never been so close or real as in this short engrossing read. It is July 2008, and the Newell family--consisting of jazz drummer father, feisty mother, and teens Miles and Sarah--leave suburban Minneapolis to escape to the safety and isolation of their summer cabin. Two years earlier, Mount Rainier exploded, causing global warming and the continual spread of ash. Crops are affected and food is beginning to run short; looting, rioting, and increased violence lead many to leave the cities. Miles cannibalizes the family's boat and bikes, cleverly producing a pedal and wind-powered vehicle, which gets them to their cabin, now occupied by two other families who refuse to leave. A poignant subplot involving Miles' oral history project provides the key to the family's survival. Vivid characterizations, nonstop action, and an entirely plausible plot combine for a thrilling story that begs for a sequel.

I highly agree with this review. It says how Miles remembers ideas and quotes from his history teacher, Mr. Kurz, And that is why the book is called Memory Boy because Miles uses those quotes for survival and it refers to them in the book. Also it say how the story begs for a sequel and that is true because at the end it leaves of with them making it to the cabin, but there are other families there and they have to stay in tents around their cabin. It ends with Miles looking up at the sky in the wilderness. A sequel to this is needed to see what happens next for example if the ash from the volcano gets over there or if there is not enough space for the other families causing and family vs family like conflict. Also I agree with the non-stop action because every chapter is a new objective or another problem they face. Overall I agree with this review.

The image I chose is a similar picture to what Miles created. He created something call the Ali Princess. It is a four seat bike that they had to rides basically everywhere because cars could not be used. There was not much gasoline left and they could not drive to the cabin. They had to ride the wind powered bike everywhere and even had to shoot from it. It is really a huge part of the book especially how in extreme times where they have no car to escape , Miles created the Ali Princess.

The conflict in this book is character vs society because Miles and his family are facing many predicaments with many different people and are also having trouble with the earth it self in the wilderness. Miles had a conflict with the gang and they fought and had to shoot there tires with guns to stop them. Also He had a conflict with the people who were in his cabin that they had and they ended up having to sleep in a tent when they would not leave. Another reason is the amount of money the places who were selling food made them cost and how they ask them many unneeded questions to even let them in. Also the conflict between Miles and his teacher when they talked and when he gave him advice that Miles at first didn't care about . Overall Miles is having problems with everyone in society, therefor the literary element is a conflict of character vs. society.

This image represents a huge theme and big idea in the book. Miles uses his memories of his history teachers lessons and he used them as survival skills for his family. When my his family has no idea on how to do anything they look to Miles and Miles looks to his memories. Without Miles and his history teacher, Mr. Kurz, they would have been lost and would have never gotten or knew about the cabin and its directions that Miles had to remember. Overall this image is a main part and the book and there would only be one page in the book if it weren't for his memory.
