Without this exchange, carbon dioxide cannot leave the body. The brain must figure out a way to overpower the carbon dioxide with oxygen, so the individual will begin to breathe more. Eventually, with untreated pneumonia and therefore decreased gas exchange, can cause death, as the body is unable to obtain the necessary oxygen to perform cellular respiration.
