         <description><![CDATA[<div>Direct Costs: </div><ul><li>Legal fines</li><li>Compensation</li><li>Paying out to replace or repair damaged equipment and property</li><li>Sick pay</li><li>Employment cover</li><li>Other legal costs </li></ul><div>Hidden costs: </div><ul><li>Delays of projects and schedules</li><li>Equipment damage</li><li>Investigation of actions and implementation to correct them</li><li>Cost of other government benefits required by injured workers</li><li>Loss of skilled workers </li></ul><div> A hit to reputation due to an incident can lead to a loss of both existing and new customers, clients, investors and partners. <br> A poor safety record will also make it difficult to hire quality staff who expect a certain level of care from the company they work for. <br>An unsafe work place, whether an incident has occurred as a result or not, has proven to lower levels of employee morale and ultimately, productivity.<br> The average cost of health and safety fines in 2016 far outstripped the cost of compliance, according to a new study<a href="http://www.arinite.co.uk/the-cost-of-health-and-safety-compliance-vs-a-prosecution-fine/"> </a>from health and safety consultants, Arinite.<br>The research found that businesses paid an average of £115,440 in fines after being found guilty of health and safety breaches in 2016. <br> Of all the fines issued in 2016, half of them were for the manufacturing industry (£16,816,673) and the average fine was over £112,000. <br> Extractive and utility supply companies then paid out the second largest amount (£7,375,120 total and £409,729 on average), followed by those in construction (£4,824,983 total and £74,231 on average).<br>A total of £32,438,677 worth of fines were issued in 2016 across the UK.<br><br></div><div><br> </div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>
