His motivation is to make sure he helps all those around him and make their lives better than his. "We pushed open the door to the back room and found four or five little kids, about eight years old or younger, all huddled in a corner" (92). This quotation shows that he was willing to risk his life to help the children survive.

One of Ponyboy's desires is for his brother Darry to love him, and stop yelling at him and start to like him and accept him for who he is. I know this because Ponyboy is always talking about how Darry doesn't like him and how Darry only loves Sodapop and not him. "He's got eyes exactly like frozen ice. He thinks I'm a pain in the neck" (42). This quote shows that, even though he may not be right, that Darry doesn't love him like he loves Sodapop.

We had all frozen. Nobody in my family had ever hit me. Nobody. Soda was wide-eyed. Darry looked at the palm of his hand where it had turned red and then looked back at me. His eyes were huge" (50). Ponyboy is terrified that he might do something to make his only small hope of a normal life disappear.

Personality Test Conclusions

The personality test we did shows that Ponyboy is the Mediator. We found that it mostly fits his personality, but not fully. For example, mediators are supposed to be optimists, and Ponyboy isn't really an optimist. One thing that does fit Ponyboy is that he's impractical, which is also a characteristic of a mediator. One event where he is impractical is where he doesn't think when he walks home alone and almost gets jumped by Socs. One time where Ponyboy isn't optimistic is when Johnny dies and Ponyboy is depressed and sees all things bad. "It drives my brother Darry nuts when I do stuff like that, cause' I'm supposed to be smart" (4). Being a Mediator really ties into how Ponyboy started thinking, at the end of the book, about why he fights.

Ponyboy is a book, his life can change at any moment just like a books plot. His life also has high points, low points, exiting points, and even some boring points. He is also a little insecure in where he will be 'tomorrow' just like many book characters. Ponyboy is a dreamer; he likes to inference about the future and revel in the present. He likes to float away in a world where everything is different. One example of this is when he drifts asleep in the vacant lot. "'Ponyboy'-Johnny was shaking me- 'Hey, Pony, wake up'" (48). Another example is when he tells Cherry that he likes watching sunsets, which is kind of weird for a Greaser.

The main conflict in the story is Greasers V.S. Socs. It is used mainly to support and become the main event in the book (the fighting and hatred). One event where they are against each other is when Ponyboy and Johnny meet five Socs in the park and Ponyboy almost drowns, but Johnny kills Bob (a Soc), and the Socs run away. "We get jumped by the Socs. I'm not sure how you spell it, but it's the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids" (2). This conflict really ties the whole book together and adds the necessary element of conflict.

The setting of the story is important because it takes place in a poor, dirty urban town, and the characters are in (violent) gangs. It is used in many of the pages to provide an unconsciously perceived insight into their lives/environment. If the story took place in a rural area, it wouldn't make sense because there are no gangs in rural communities. "Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while" (3). The story also probably wouldn't be as entertaining if it took place in a rural area.
