I think that the article was full of information, but no proof to back it up.

Maine was abandoned probably because people feared that the Indians might come back.

150 people were charged but only 90 people were hanged because people thought that some people were more guilty then others were. Probably also because they had more "evidence" to back up that that person was a  witch.

I believe they thought that illnesses came from witchcraft because they wanted it to exist and they wanted to find some type of reason for it to exist.

I think you can compare the witch trials to the era when people were accusing each other of being communists. It had gotten so bad that government officials had received threats because people believed they were communists. I believe it could have been a race thing. In the story she is the salve, and as we all know the way slaves were treated was unfair. Tituba was already looked down upon, so they might as well make her look worse.
