Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Shiloh, in my opinion is one of the greatest children’s books ever written. As someone who has loved many of my own pets, both dogs and cats, I can relate to the love and emotion felt when reading this book. I believe anyone who has even the slightest interest in animals or a heartwarming story will love this book. Those who understand the values of hard work and commitment can also take something from this story. The story starts out with a young boy named Marty Preston. He and his family live in a small town in West Virginia. It is a beautiful day out and while Marty is out on a walk out by the Shiloh schoolhouse he comes across a skittish young beagle. After attempting to greet it Marty realizes this dog is not in the best condition and has obviously been through something unpleasant so he takes him home. His father comes to the conclusion that the dog must belong to Judd Travers, a local hunter. Marty knows him to not be very kind or honest so when his father tells him to return the dog Marty is hesitant but knows it’s the right thing. After Marty brought the dog back he saw Judd kick him and after seeing that he asked Judd to stop. Judd didn’t pay any attention to him because Shiloh was not Marty’s so he could do what he wanted with him. Marty wanted to keep Shiloh but knew neither he nor his family had the money to support anyone or anything else. Until one night Shiloh had found his way back to Marty’s home. Naturally, Marty had no intentions of taking him back to Judd. Marty build a place back by the shed behind his house keeping Shiloh hidden back there. He would visit Shiloh, play with him, and bring him what he could of his own food until one night his mother found out about him hiding Shiloh. She gave him until the morning to decide what to do with Shiloh. That night a German Shepard got after Shiloh and hurt him bad. After finding Shiloh, Marty had to tell his dad and take him into the vet. His parents agree to let Marty keep him until Shiloh recovers then he must go back to Judd. The longer Shiloh is around the Preston family, the more they grow to love him. When the time came to take Shiloh back Marty took a path through the woods to get to Judd’s and saw him shoot a deer out of season. Marty then had an idea. Marty would make a bargain with Judd that if he let him work for him and save up enough money to pay for Shiloh, Marty would keep quiet about Judd hunting out of season.Marty did hard manual labor for Judd slowly saving up enough money to pay for Shiloh. There were several times Judd made it extremely difficult on Marty but he refused to quite. He could not give up on Shiloh. It was out of pure determination and love that Marty never gave up his pursuit of Shiloh. When Marty returned home with Shiloh he was welcomed back with love and affection. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone of any age. It is one of my favorite books and I look forward to reading it to my children someday.

Owen by Kevin Henkes

Where you think the author got his ideas or information. I believe a book like “Owen” is an enjoyable children’s book thought up by the authors own experiences. Either it was through his experiences as a child or when a child of his own was learning to let go of something special. When Owen was first told by his mom and dad that he would have to put his fuzzy yellow blanket under his pillow to get an even better big boy present Owen was not very enthused. His blanket was his favorite thing in the world and for them to tell him he could no longer have it and that it would be replaced with something totally different did not go over well with him. I could understand that feeling about letting go of something that meant so much to me. No one likes to let go of something they enjoy. We have all gone through a point in our childhood where we had to let go of something that was valuable to us at the time just like Owen did, but it was for the best. Luckily in Owen’s case he got to keep a part of that blanket with him just in a different form that usual. I think this is a story that most anybody could relate to because we were all children at one point and had something just as important to us as Owen did with his blanket. I would strongly recommend this book to any parents with children who may be going through a tough transition out of a toddler stage in to an elementary age child.

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

Ever since I was a child I can remember The Lorax as being one of my all-time favorite books. I loved the way everything rhymed and how different this story was from most others. The characters weren’t people or even animals, just made up ‘things’. There were characters like the lorax himself, the onceler, the bar-ba-loots and the swamy-swom-swans. Each character had a distinct personality and attitude about what was happening around them.
The Lorax was basically a big orange furry ‘thing’ that lived in the stumps of the trees. When the onceler came to town and decided he was going to start a business making ‘thneeds’ out of the soft trufula trees the lorax let him know that he spoke for the trees and that his cutting down of the trees was not okay and it eventually effected everything and everyone around them. It got so bad that one day when all of the trees were gone along with all of the little animals the lorax then decided it was time for him to leave also. If there were no more trees for him to live in there wasn’t much else for him to do but leave and find somewhere better.

I can remember my dad singing all of the rhymes and jingles from the book to make it more enjoyable for me and my siblings. I love reading this story to the children I babysit because it takes me back to when I was a child and how great this book was after hearing it the first time. I hope that children today and future generations appreciate and love this book along with many other Dr. Seuss books as much as I do.

I noticed the book had an animated look to it so I felt safe assuming it was going to be a fictional story. After reading the first few pages I quickly realized this was not a realistic fictional book because massive trains do not just appear in front of somebody’s home and it did not make sense that the main character was the only one who heard it. If this were a realistic fictional book everyone would have heard it. After the conductor of the train told the main character the train was called the polar express and after seeing it was only full of children I was sure it was definitely a fictional book. The adventures all of the children experienced sounded fun but also dangerous at the same time. The stories reassured my thoughts on the genre of the book. No one could have experienced adventures like those in the first place, let alone live to tell them. If you read the book I am sure you will also find similar situations that show to be completely fictional.

This children’s book is one of a kind. The rhyming flow of the story keeps the reader interested and entertained very well. The use of life-like pictures throughout the book also grasps the reader’s attention. The book takes the reader through many different scenarios where the person she is talking about could be anything in the world and she would recognize them immediately no matter how strange or random it may be, she would know without a doubt it was them. This fictional story is a great read mostly for children in grades 4-8 and I could see how parents could also enjoy reading this to their children. It is touching and frankly true the way any mother would be able to tell who their child was based on the tiniest details about them. There is a great deal of emotion shown in the book and I would strongly recommend it to anyone.

Ella is a young woman who was cursed with an unfortunate gift from a fairy named Lucinda when she was a baby. Ella’s mother, maid and Lucinda were the only ones who knew about her gift. If anyone else knew about it they could easily use it against her. Throughout her life Ella encounters a few unfortunate events in which she was forced to do things she did not want to. Things did not get easier for Ella after her mother passed away. Her father soon remarried and she soon had two evil stepsisters along with an evil stepmother. The girls made sure to use Ella’s gift to their advantage making her do horrible things that Ella never would have done such as tell her dearest friend that she never wanted to see her again.

After enduring so much pain from her sisters she decided to set out to find the fairy who gave her the gift. Along the way she faces ogres and other unfortunate creatures but in the end she finds Lucinda and marries prince Char. The main point of the story is that everyone is stronger than what they believe. Ella found that if she believed in herself that everything would be okay and work out in the end. There is so much the reader can take away from this story, but the main one is to always have faith in yourself and others. 8ҝzx

Hoot is a great book for any age reader. It has an amazing message that is centered around the idea that we should always take an interest and precaution in our wildlife. When a boy named Roy Eberhart moved to the sunny state of Florida from Montana his world is changed dramatically. Roy was a shy, friendly and caring boy. He was also a very curious boy. In fact it is what led him to two of his friends in the story. When Roy becomes suspicious of a boy he keeps seeing run around the town barefoot and does not go to school he begins to follow him and at first he tries to help him. Roy soon took interest in this boy named Mulletfingers. After Mulletfingers’ step sister, Beatrice, notices Roy’s interest in trying to help her brother she explains to him her brother’s situation and what he is actually trying to accomplish by being so sneaky and secluded. Roy decided he would help, but not in the ways that Mulletfingers was trying to accomplish it. The issue Mulletfingers was fighting was that there were little burrowing owls that were still living in a construction area.

Roy does some digging and learns that the owls are legally protected and cannot be harmed. The building that was going up was going to be the only pancake house in their town of Coconut Cove. Therefore, no one was really looking into any possible issues that might prevent the pancake house from opening. However, the business manager of the pancake house is well aware of the issue with the owls and Roy, Beatrice and Mulletfingers fight to show the community the issue with the owls and end up showing everyone the importance of the issue. The land is then donated to the town by the pancake company and made into an area for the owls where they can live peacefully away from any harm in the future.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, Vladimir Nabokov

I have always loved and admired the story of Jekyll and Hyde. After performing in theater I was more than excited to read the actual story. I loved the creative idea that someone could be one personality at one point, then turn around and be someone 100% different. The story of Jekyll and Hyde is there is a man named Dr. Henry Jekyll is trying to create a medicine that will help his father survive his illness. When he is unable to get approval from the hospital committee he is forced to use himself as a test subject. Sadly, the experiment takes a turn for the worst. It has no good effects. The formula makes Dr. Jekyll turn into a terrifyingly different person. This causes him to do horrible things to innocent people.

Once Dr. Jekyll realizes he can never again permanently stay himself he is forced to take his own life. It is an utterly terrifying thought that you will be forced to live the rest of your life with someone who only wants to cause pain and agony for others. I loved the passion from the story and the emotion that can be felt from any reader. It is a story generally for children in middle school and up, but it can still be broken down enough for a child to understand with less graphic examples. I would most definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a good mystery or love story. ]"ҝ`p

This book is a great read for all ages. I can remember the first time I read this book when I was in middle school and after reading it recently I was surprised at how much I actually remembered. I was taken back to when I lived in my old town and my old school and how I absorbed the information then compared to now. I especially loved all of the characters and different stories they shared throughout the book.

Opal learns several life lessons from each of the characters such as patience, how to make you happiest in life and what it means to be a true friend. She learned the most important lesson from her best friend, Winn-Dixie. She learned what it meant to be a true friend and never let go of someone you love. She grows so much as a person and I believe it is a timeless classic that will touch anyone. I plan to read this to my future students as well as my own children. ѝP

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games is an action packed story about a girl named Katniss Everdeen. She lives with and takes care of her sister and mother in District 12 of Panem. In the land of Panem there are 12 districts that make up the land and each contributing different goods to the “Capital”. The Capital is the wealthiest area in all of Panem and is given most of the goods provided by each of the districts. Seventy-three years ago the districts attempted to overtake the Capital to gain back their rights to freedom, but sadly they were defeated by the Capital. From that time on there would be an annual reaping where one girl and one boy would be chosen from each district to gather and fight to the death.

Unfortunately for Katniss she has to volunteer in her little sister’s place along with her friend, Peter Mallark. Both Katniss and Peter must travel to the Capital and participate in “The Hunger Games”. Here they will battle to stay alive and come out as victors. At the beginning of the games Peter and Katniss are separated and Peter joins up an alliance with victors from other districts to stay alive. Katniss is left to fend for herself for the majority of the games. It isn’t until she is seriously injured when Peter comes to fight alongside of her. The two end up putting on a show for those watching at home hoping that their love story will fascinate viewers. The reason they are seeking their approval throughout the games is to gain sponsors who will volunteer to have supplies and gifts sent to them to help keep them alive. Luckily for Katniss and Peter the audience was intrigued by their love story and they both came out as victors of the 73rd Hunger Games. However, their adventures do not end here. There is so much more in store for both of them after they arrive back home.

I found this story to be amazing. First I saw the movie but I knew it came from a book series. I was excited to learn that this is a Dorothy Canfield Award winning book from 2010. I enjoyed comparing the movie to the book and how I saw the characters differently than in the movie. Even after seeing the movie I would recommend this book to anyone else who has or has not seen the movie. So many different ways you can view the characters and the situations they are in throughout the story. This is now one of my favorite books. ՝

John Roy Lynch is about a man who's father was Irish and who's was an enslaved African American. Genetically he was half black half white, but not during this time. He was seen as only black and therefore was considered a slave. For a good majority of his life, John was a slave and it was not until he was in his sixteen when he was emancipated and allowed to live as a free man. As far as he was concerned the Civil War was over. He went on as a free man from that point on and became and incredibly successful. He would go on to serve as justice of the peace and later on in the U.S. Congress. This man was truly an icon for the ages and still serves as a great historical marker for our history in America.

On page 215 of the book, Elijah is handed a piece of paper by Mr. Leroy that has a quote I enjoyed at the end of the note. It states "the body won't never endure but something inside all of us be so strong it always be flying" (Curtis 215). This was only a brief saying in the story but I still enjoyed it and I love how it describes how even though someone or something is gone, a part of it or them will always live on through someone else or their actions. That line spoke strongly to me because I remember when my grandmother passed away and I always try to honor her memory by setting a good example for my little sister to be as helpful and as kind as I can be. I do this hoping she and others around me will spread this positive outlook on life and benefit from it as much as I have.

This fun and easy to learn book for children learning their ABC's. The book continuously describes the letters in order beginning with "a, b and c". As the story goes on the letters all meet up in a coconut tree. The best way to read this book is with a little jingle to make it fun for the children. With all of the colors and tilted letters, the readers should have no trouble paying attention and following along with the book.

This adventurous and entertaining folktale about a young girl, Red Riding Hood, is a classic tale for all children. It is one of my personal favorites and it also well known and loved by so many others. It begins with Little Red Riding Hood taking a basket of goods to her grandmothers house in the woods. But, on her path she comes across a mischievous and sneaky wolf. He attempts to sway her from her path but is unsuccessful. He then decides on a plan to beat her to her grandmothers house and set a trap for Red Riding Hood. Once he gets Riding Hoods grandma out of the way he quickly disguises himself as Riding Hood's grandma. He lures her in with his innocent act and when he is given the chance he chances Riding Hood until a heroic wood cutter appears and saves her and her grandmother from the wolf. In the end, Riding Hood learns the lesson not to talk to strangers and to be cautious about what she tells someone about herself. Overall, a great lesson for children and a great read!

It begins with Alice falling down a rabbit hole due to her curiosity with a talking rabbit in a dress coat continuously stating, "I'm late I'm late I'm Late". Out of curiosity she follows the rabbit and encounters several different creatures with different problems. In her attempt to be as kind as possible she is met with different obstacles throughout her time in Wonderland. These lessons are what prepare her for the challenges she will face in the real world and also help her to discover a part of herself she did not realize she had.

In this timeless fantasy novel we meet Dorothy, a young girl who cannot seem to stay out of trouble. When her world is turned upside down after her dog was taken away she is convinced she cannot stay home any longer when Todo, her dog, finds his way back to her. While she attempts to run away, her home is hit by a massive tornado that sends her and Todo into the magical land of Oz. When she arrives the first thing she wants, ironically, is to be back home. She is them sent down the path of the yellow brick road by the good witch, Glinda, in a magical pair of Ruby slippers. These slippers contain a great deal of power that the evil witch of the west desires. Dorothy encounters many friends, a scarecrow, a tin man and a cowardly lion. All of the characters are in search of the magical land of Oz and the wonderful wizard who lives there and who can solve each of their problems. Once they finally arrive he tells them the only way they can be helped is if they kill the wicked witch and bring back her broom. Only then will they receive their rewards. Only when they return after the deed they come to find out the wizard is a fake and look to Glinda for help. She helps reassure them that all they had to do was believe in themselves and to remember there is no place like home. A few clicks and hopes later, Dorothy returns home and vows to never go astray or try to leave ever again. I have always loved this story and it will remain on my bookshelf as long as I live.

Their experiences was extremely difficult and frustrating at times for each of them. For Ha moving to a new country with a language barrier really made her life much harder than it already was. After reading all of the things she and her family went through before and after moving to the United States I now have a greater respect and appreciation for where I live. On this particular adventure, Ms. Frizzle takes her class through the body of one of her students to study the actual anatomy of the body. She is more of a hands on approach kind of teacher. Throughout the journey, the students discover several things about themselves and the human body that they did not know before they began. This is a fun, entertaining and adventurous story. I also found it very useful in a classroom setting. It is great for any elementary school level to read.

This fun and catchy flowing story reminds the reader that everyone is created the same way. We all my look a little different than one another, but we are all made the same way with ten little toes and ten little fingers. Reminding children that they are no better or worse than anyone else reminds them that it should not matter what someone looks like. I enjoyed all of the rhyming and cute pictures of the little babies. I would have to say I would recommend this book to anyone, teachers, parents or daycare centers.

Dear Professor Soloman,
Though this is a tragically upsetting tale of a young girl who is forced to spend the last two years of her life quietly hiding away from the Nazi army, I see it as a beautiful piece of literature. I have always enjoyed history and everyone's perspective is different in regards to their own experiences and opinions about what was happening in the world around them. By reading Anne Franks story and being able to visualize just how miserable the last years of her life must have been breaks my heart. I can not even begin to imagine the terror they felt knowing that if they were caught they would be immediately sent to the death camps or otherwise known as "concentration camps". This was one of the most tragic times in the history of the world. To read about a child's point of view during this time makes me eternally grateful for everything that I have in life and I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.

Sincerely,
Taylor Hampton.

Black Beauty was a horse that experienced the best of care to the worst. It is one of the best books that has great insight into what cruelty to horses and animals in general was like. It broke through barriers for those who were passionate about animals rights and animal cruelty prevention. Anne Sewell, the author, only wrote this novel back in 1877. Unfortunately she passed away a few months after the publication of her book. I am a huge animal lover and after reading this book I want to get more involved in animal abuse prevention programs because nothing breaks my heart more than seeing an animal being abused or neglected. If other readers are like me and love animals, I guarantee this is a book they too will enjoy.

The following links are to animal abuse prevention sites and give better insight about what to look for in animals who may be experiencing abuse or neglect and how anyone can help:
"Born Free USA"
http://www.bornfreeusa.org/index.php?gclid=CjwKEAiA1ITCBRDO-oLA-q_n8xYSJADjBQfGdFNiOTESMmPZBLCQmyy-hop4MSQhyX3N67eX5UDBGxoCgqjw_wcB

"Recognizing Animal Cruelty and Abuse"
http://www.petful.com/animal-welfare/recognizing-animal-cruelty-and-abuse/

"The Humane Society of the United States"
http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/abuse_neglect/tips/cruelty_action.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/

Comments:
Personally, I believe anyone who has pets or any kind of interest in animals should take a look into these sight to see what they can do as an individual to stop the mistreatment of any animals.

I do not know what I would do if anything happened to my dog, Tex.
