The back of the room is where our books will be stored, it's organized in a way where our students can grab a book and choose to sit in the chill zone. We also included a class pet, (marshmellow!).

We made a floor plan for a Grade 9 Homeroom/ English Classroom. We intentionally chose colours and patterns based on what areas of the room we felt would be more colourful and artistic vs what we believed could be more minimalistic and less overwhelming for learners. Everything in the room is present based on necessity, and intensionally placed to ensure the most focus while leaving room for creative pursuits.

By Julie, Adam and Minira

in our OISE classrooms, while the small group tables are wonderful, I find I’m often craning my neck to see the teacher when they are presenting. This is uncomfortable and distracting. We tried to create a desk/chair orientation that gives all students a relatively straightforward view of the “presentation desk”, while still maintaining workable desk space in front of them. This side of the room is a bit tidier, prioritizes natural light, and limits distractions. As well, the teacher’s desk is rebranded as the “presentation desk”, encouraging all students to “take the stage” and step into the teacher’s role when presenting. The other side of the room is dedicated to the reading rug, craft materials and open craft workspace, and walls full of books and colorful student’s artwork. This is what first greets students as they enter the room, where y are welcome to work on crafting or reading in the morning before taking their seats. - Juliana and Euan

The Boundless is a thrilling adventure by Toronto’s Kenneth Oppel. Spanning a whooping seven miles long and composed of a thousand carriages, the Boundless is a spectacular train. Complete with a performing circus and swimming pool, the Boundless crosses Canada from coast to coast in the late 1900s. Will, the protagonist, moves through a social hierarchy as he enters the worlds of each carriage. He begins his journey with the thronging crowds of “humbly dressed passengers carrying odd, tattered suitcases and sagging boxes and bundled crying babies” before entering the successively wealthier worlds of the more privileged classes.

Along the journey, we learn about the history and traditions of Canada’s Indigenous people and European settlers.

I was enthralled by Oppel’s vivid descriptions of the train’s journey through Canada’s vast ever-changing landscapes. These diverse, but equally spectacular settings, remind me of road trips I took long ago with my family, where the lush green mountains of BC slowly unfolded into long, scenic stretches of prairie farmland. If you like thrilling, adventure-packed books, The Boundless is for you. Kenneth Oppel currently lives in Toronto, Canada. I recommend reading this book aloud to grades 3+, as an independent book for grades 6+., and as a novel study for grades 6-10.

Ned Vizzini's It's Kind of a Funny Story is a beautifully written and brutally honest story about teen mental health. The story follows 15-year-old Craig, who struggles with severe clinical depression. When his depression begins to spiral into suicidal thoughts, Craig decides to check himself into a psychiatric hospital, where he meets and bonds with new patients with different experiences. During his stay, Craig learns to understand his depression and express himself, particularly through art and music. As we venture through Craig's journey, we can see that recovery is not linear; it's messy, awkward, and sometimes, kind of funny.

As you flip through every page, you will experience Vizzini's raw and genuine storytelling. Craig's stories will leave you heart-torn, but his small victories will leave you cheering for him on the sidelines. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, as it reminds us that laughter, love and growth exist in even the darkest places.

I recommend reading this book as a read-aloud to ages 13-14+, and as an independent novel for ages 15+.

Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson, tells the story of Jesse, an eleven-year-old boy determined to become the fastest runner at his school. Growing up with five sisters, Jesse hopes to earn his father’s attention and prove himself. His plans change when Leslie, a spirited and imaginative new girl, arrives and beats everyone, including Jesse.

Jesse and Leslie, both somewhat outcasts, form a close friendship and create an imaginary world called “Terabithia” across a creek in the woods. This secret kingdom becomes a place of adventure and creativity, where they escape everyday challenges. Together, they show the importance of friendship, creativity, and support in facing personal struggles. Later, the book explores heavy themes of grief, so readers should be aware it contains emotionally intense moments.

My favourite part is the vivid description of Terabithia. As someone who loves fantasy, it reminded me of the creativity and wonder of my own childhood.

Due to the heavy grief later experienced in the book, I recommend this book to children aged 8–10, particularly as a read-aloud, while older children aged 11+ can read independently.

If you want to revisit your childhood and have a big sob, this one is for you!

Because of Winn-Dixie - Hope Sears

The novel Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo is a heartwarming story about a young girl named Opal who moves to a new town in Florida with her father, the preacher. One day, she meets a scruffy stray dog in a grocery store and decides to name him Winn-Dixie. The dog quickly becomes her best friend and helps her connect with people in her community, each with their own stories, struggles, and kindness to share. Through these new friendships, Opal learns about love, forgiveness, and the importance of understanding others.

My favourite part is when Winn-Dixie helps Opal bring everyone together for a party. It’s such a touching moment that shows how one small act or in this case, one friendly dog, can make a big difference in people’s lives. It reminded me of when I moved to Toronto and felt nervous about branching out and meeting people. However, as Opal demonstrated in the novel, I realized that being open and kind can help you find connection anywhere.

Overall, I would recommend this book as a read-aloud to grades 2-4 and as an independent reading book to grades 4-6. And if you have previously read Charlotte’s Web or The Secret Garden, I would highly recommend Because of Winn-Dixie for your next adventure.

Kianna Hamdan Book Review Blog - Frankenstein

Frankenstein has always been one of my favorite books that I read in high school because it really stuck with me on a personal level. The story isn’t just about a monster, it’s about what it means to be human, to feel different, and to want acceptance. I connected deeply to the creature’s struggle to find his place in the world, especially his fear of rejection and loneliness. I am not ashamed or afraid to admit this, but I saw myself in him. I’ve often been scared to show my true self, worried about how others might see me, and this story made me think a lot about how painful it can be to hide parts of who you are.

What I love most about this book is how timeless it feels. Even though it was written over 200 years ago, the emotions still feel real and relatable today. It reminds me how society can be quick to judge what it doesn’t understand, and how easy it is to turn someone into an “outsider.” (Actually may be even more relevant today than it ever has been with the rise of social media). Reading it made me feel empathy for people who are misunderstood or left out, and it also made me reflect on my own journey toward self-acceptance. Every time I think about this book I’m reminded that we all just want to be seen and loved for who we really are.

Most people know this tale as just a Halloween story about a scary monster, but it is so much more than that. I truly recommend everyone to read it because it speaks to something we all experience, like feeling lonely, struggling with self-confidence, and wanting to be loved and accepted. It reminds us that beneath all our fears and insecurities, we are all just trying to find where we belong. (These ideas are what makes us human!)

P.S. / EXTRA NOTE (because I like to ramble): I really like this book cover because it shows a man standing alone on top of a mountain, looking out at the world below him (Victor Frankenstein). He seems to have reached a peak, yet there are still more mountains rising above the clouds, which makes me think about ambition and never feeling finished. It connects perfectly to the idea of Frankenstein as the “modern Prometheus,” since Victor pushes past limits and tries to reach heights that humans are not meant to (creating his own version of God's will). The cover feels powerful but also lonely, showing how climbing to your peak and reaching it can still leave someone feeling isolated. I chose to show you guys this book cover because it captures both the beauty and sadness of the story, and it reminds me that even when we achieve something great, there is always more ahead, and sometimes that can feel just as heavy as the climb itself. Chasing things endlessly can actually lead to the path of misery and feeling extremely unsatisfied. Instead we should strive to accept ourselves in every state we are in.

As Lowen gets drawn deeper into the mystery and into Verity’s husband’s life she begins to question what’s real and who to trust.

I absolutely loved reading Verity by Colleen Hoover. This psychological thriller captured my attention from the very first page and kept me hooked until the end. The story is full of suspense, unexpected twists, and dark secrets that make it impossible to put down.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a well-known fantasy novel by C.S. Lewis, the first book in The Chronicles of Narnia series. The story begins during World War II, when four siblings, Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter, are sent to the countryside for safety. While exploring the old house they are staying in, Lucy discovers a wardrobe that leads into the magical land of Narnia.

Narnia is trapped in an endless winter caused by the White Witch, who claims to be Queen and rules through fear. She turns those who challenge her into stone and tempts Edmund with promises of power, which leads him to betray his siblings. Meanwhile, Aslan, a powerful and wise lion, returns to Narnia after a long absence. With the help of talking animals, fauns, centaurs, and other mythical creatures, the children join Aslan’s army to restore peace, courage, and hope to Narnia. A key turning point in the story is Aslan’s selfless sacrifice on Edmund’s behalf and his return, which brings new life to Narnia and breaks the Witch’s hold, leading to a final battle between good and evil.

I first read this book in elementary school and loved it for its adventure, magical world, and memorable characters. When I reread it as an adult, I began to notice the Christian symbolism that I completely missed as a child. Aslan’s sacrifice and return reminded me of a central Christian story of selfless love, and Edmund's being forgiven connected strongly to themes of grace and second chances. Seeing these connections made the story more meaningful to me now.

If you’re looking for a fantasy novel that is both engaging and thought-provoking, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a great choice for a wide range of young readers. I would recommend reading it aloud to students in Grades 3–5, as an independent read for students in Grades 5–7, and as a novel study for students in Grades 5–8.

Matilda is a book and a movie that I liked when I was growing up. This story is about a young girl who loves reading and learning more than anything else. Matilda Wormwood is smart, curious, and imaginative, but her family doesn’t understand her and often treats her unkindly.

At school she meets Miss Honey, who is gentle and kind to her, and becomes a friend and mentor. On the other hand, the fearsome headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, rules with cruelty and strictness. What makes the story exciting is Matilda’s cleverness and her discovery of a special ability that helps her solve problems and stand up to unfairness. The quirky illustrations by Quentin Blake make it even more engaging to read the book.

I would recommend this book to grades 4-6 as the author combines humour with important life lessons. Children can see the power of knowledge, imagination, and courage. They learn that even when situations seem unfair, kindness can help overcome challenges. Matilda’s story inspires confidence and resilience, showing young readers that their talents matter and that standing up for themselves and others is important. It’s a book that entertains while encouraging growth and a love for reading.

Betty

The Giver by Lois Lowry (post by: Colette S.)

If you’re looking for a quick and accessible, yet profound read, I highly recommend The Giver by Lois Lowry.

Imagine a world where war, poverty, pain, and fear no longer exist. While seemingly ideal, this powerful dystopian novel reveals the costs of living in a perfectly controlled society where conflict, emotions, and choice have been removed. The story follows Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy who has been selected to become the next Receiver of Memory. Through his training with the Giver, Jonas begins to uncover unsettling secrets about his community built on sameness and predictability.

What stood out to me most about this book was how Lowry uses simple language to explore complex ideas about individuality, freedom, and the role of memories and emotions in shaping who we are. Through Jonas’ journey, she critiques the dangers of conformity and the loss of human connection that can come from trying to create a “perfect” society. The novel raises many important questions and can resonate with readers across ages because of its thought-provoking themes, making it a great book for classroom exploration and discussion.

Overall, The Giver is a memorable novel that encourages readers to think about what it means to be human. I would recommend it as a read-aloud for grades 5+, as an independent read for grades 6+, and as a novel study for grades 7+.

The Wild Robot is a children’s novel written and illustrated by Peter Brown and published in 2016. It became a New York Times bestseller, and a film adaptation with the same title was later produced by DreamWorks Animation. Although the movie won several awards, its storyline differs significantly from that of the book.

The story follows a robot who is accidentally deployed on a small island and gradually becomes part of the natural world. Over time, the robot adapts to her environment, forms a family, and develops friendships with the animals on the island. The book explores themes such as identity, purpose, and the relationship between artificial intelligence and nature.

My favorite part of the book is the robot’s experience of raising her “teenage” son. One scene humorously describes how “it’s only natural for adolescent goslings to be a little… moody.” Watching the robot learn how to be a mother and navigate this stage of parenting is both amusing and relatable. As a parent myself, I found this part especially meaningful and reflective of real-life parenting challenges.

If you enjoy children’s stories that combine humor with deeper themes, then you will love The Wild Robot. I recommend this book for read-aloud in grades 3 and up, as an independent read for grades 4–6, and as a novel study text for grades 5–7.

The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf is a powerful middle-grade novel that addresses the refugee experience through a child’s perspective. The story is told by a young girl who notices a quiet new boy sitting at the back of her classroom. He barely speaks, doesn’t eat lunch, and seems different from the other students. As she begins to know him better, she and her friends slowly come to understand that his silence is connected to a much bigger story about loss, displacement, and courage.

My favourite part of the book is how the classmates begin to include the boy in small, thoughtful ways. This connects to my practicum experience, where many refugee students felt overwhelmed by a new language, routines, and expectations. As in the book, what helped most was patience, and peers who made them feel they belonged.

I would highly recommend this book. If you enjoyed Wonder by R.J. Palacio or Refugee by Alan Gratz, then you will likely enjoy The Boy at the Back of the Class as well. I recommend this book for grades 4-6 during read aloud, and grade 6 for independent reading.

Anne of Green Gables is a book I have read and had the chance to visit the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery (the author) in Prince Edward Island last year. The novel tells the story of Anne, an orphan who is mistakenly sent to be adopted and to live with siblings Marilla and Matthew in the community of Green Gables. From that moment on, a series of vivid adventures began. Anne is a character full of imagination and a strong sense of justice. Although she often gets herself into trouble, her optimism, determination, and kindness help her learn and grow and find a true sense of belonging. The story is engaging, showing Anne’s growing relationship with Marilla and Matthew, the new friends she makes at school, and the problems and misunderstandings she faces. Even though Anne makes mistakes at home and at school, she shows that it’s possible to stay positive and resilient, even in difficult situations. She shows how to face conflicts, work hard, build friendships, and express oneself with courage. Using lively and clear language, the book talks about family, friendship, dreams, and happiness. This book is suitable for students in Grades 5–6. Its themes closely relate to their everyday lives, and Anne’s journey of growth can be inspiring for young readers.

Sticks & Stones (Upside-Down Magic #2) reviewed by Adam Lauder

The second instalment in the popular Upside-Down Magic series co-authored by Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins, this imaginative and inspiring story about a sympathetic gang of misfit students enrolled at Dunwiddle Magic School follows their deepening self-awareness of their unusual gifts. These uncharacteristic powers don’t make them “wonky”—as some “meanies” in the regular magic classes call them—just different. This is a book that celebrates the many shades of difference, from diverse ethnicities and sensorialities to non-traditional family structures. Playfully profound, the characters’ ability to transform into hybrid animal and even inorganic forms challenges conventional ideas of identity and belonging. Not abstractly philosophical, however, the book keeps readers hooked as it follows protagonist Nory Horace and her band of friends as they challenge the ploy of Dunwiddle’s chief meanie, Lacey Clench, to have the UDM kids expelled from the school for endangering regular magic students with their unwieldy powers. Sticks & Stones’ concluding speech from Principal Gonzales defending the UDM program for “encourage[ing] all of us to embrace and understand difference” is a heart-warming tonic in our own moment of Trumpian intolerance. I enjoyed re-reading this book, whose timely and urgent messaging I found to be delivered with a remarkably light and engaging touch. Although this book is recommended for ages 9-12, I first read it with my own daughter when she was 6 or 7, and first she, and then her younger sister, were immediately hooked on this series—both of them going on to read other titles independently (but they were advanced readers). Highly recommend :)

Ashley Rhodes-Courter’s memoir Three Little Words is a powerful and deeply moving account of her nine years in the Florida foster care system. The story begins when Ashley is just three years old. Her mother, who had been abandoned by her own teenage mother, was only seventeen when Ashley was born. From an early age, Ashley entered foster care, where she experienced fourteen different placements over nine years. She was constantly moving from home to home, sometimes carrying all her belongings in garbage bags and other times being forced to leave everything behind. The only consistent feelings in her life were uncertainty and the belief that she mattered to no one.

Throughout the memoir, Rhodes-Courter describes overcrowded and unsafe foster homes, exposure to inappropriate situations, and severe physical and emotional abuse. Despite these traumatic experiences, her voice remains honest, clear, and compelling. A turning point occurs when she is nine years old and meets Mary Miller, her court-appointed advocate, who promises to help her find a forever family. Even after being adopted by Gail and Phil Courter, Ashley struggles to trust that she is truly home, testing their commitment out of fear of being sent away again.

This memoir balances heartbreak with hope and highlights both the failures of the foster care system and the resilience of children. It is an emotional, eye-opening, and unforgettable read that encourages empathy and advocacy for vulnerable children.

Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns is a deeply moving novel about two Afghan women whose lives come together during years of war and instability. From the start, the story places the reader inside a country that is constantly changing and becoming more restrictive, especially for women.

The novel follows Mariam and Laila, who end up living in the same house with the same husband. What really struck me is how the chaos outside mirrors what happens inside their home. As the government becomes harsher, their husband becomes more controlling. As the streets grow more dangerous, their world inside the house also shrinks. Their suffering reflects the political situation because both their country and their household are ruled by fear, power, and a lack of choice. Yet, like Afghanistan itself, they also hold onto moments of strength and hope.

My favorite part was Laila’s love story and the moment she and Tariq reunite. Their bond reminded me that love can survive even when everything around it is falling apart.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes emotional stories about courage, friendship, and survival. If you enjoy novels that show resilience in the face of injustice, you will love A Thousand Splendid Suns.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a powerful and deeply moving YA novel that confronts themes of anti‑Black racism, police brutality, and systemic injustice. Told through the eyes of sixteen‑year‑old Starr Carter, the story follows her in the aftermath of witnessing the murder of her childhood friend Khalil by a white police officer. As the incident becomes national news, Starr is thrust into the center of a media storm. She must navigate the distorted public narrative surrounding Khalil, the pressures of being one of the few Black students at her predominantly white private school, and the complex dynamics within her own family and community.

The novel became a breakout success, partly due to its timely publication along with the rising visibility of the Black Lives Matter movement. It received widespread critical acclaim and earned numerous awards. At the same time, its candid portrayal of racial violence and its use of authentic, but explicit language have made it one of the most frequently challenged books in contemporary literature. Controversy aside, The Hate U Give remains an exceptionally moving and illuminating piece of modern YA literature. I’ve recommended it to many people over the years as a powerful entry point for understanding anti‑Black racism and gaining deeper insight into Black experiences.

Julie Lind

As Charlie begins high school, he feels unsure of where he belongs, but over time he forms friendships that help him grow and understand himself better. The story follows his experiences with school, friendships, family, and self discovery, without giving away how his journey ends.

One of my favourite parts of the book is how honest Charlie’s voice feels. Reading his letters made me think about times when I felt nervous starting something new or unsure about fitting in. This self to text connection made the story more meaningful because Charlie’s thoughts felt real and relatable, even when he struggled. The letter format also made the book feel personal, as if Charlie was sharing his thoughts directly with the reader.

I recommend The Perks of Being a Wallflower to readers who enjoy realistic stories about growing up, friendship, and identity.

Sirens of Titan (1959) is a book that presents a lot of blind corners. You have no idea where the twisting, absurdist narrative is turning next, and Vonnegut — as he always does so well! — keeps you laughing all the way.

Malachi Constant, the most famous man in the world, is swept away by an interdimensional lunatic who uses his old-moneyed power and ability to see across time to populate Mars and take over the Earth as its god-king. Constant, the “space wanderer” is cyclically stripped of his humanity and aimlessly struggles to define himself over and over again until he learns that true contentment is not necessarily found in definition or personal agency, but it is always still within reach.

This book is an early entry point to the New Wave of science fiction that swept the 60s and 70s, which saw an uptick in experimental form and socio-political commentary. It would be a fantastic way to introduce this genre to high-school readers (who are themselves grappling with new questions of life’s purpose and meaning), as well as to explore the expansive possibilities of creative storytelling.

-Juliana Guzy

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is a young adult series following the protagonist Celaena Sardothean. Celaena is a 17 year-old assassin who lives in a world that has been conquered and destroyed by an anarchist. The King of Adarlan is Celaena’s biggest enemy. The book begins with her being released from the slave mines of Endovier, which she has been imprisoned in for 1 year. She is released to perform as the Prince’s champion in a contest that will gain her her freedom.

This 8-book series provides the reader with an immense sense of adventure. Maas takes you through a multiverse of books that promote female heroism, strength, and power to overcome anything. Not only is the protagonist powerful, she also overcomes death, life challenges, and a trailing contest in order to fight for her kingdom. The series provides underlying messaging surrounding grief, loss, and mental health struggles that are important for teens to read. This is a wonderful example for early readers due to the important messaging, symbolism, and female leadership across the books. Celaena is a wonderful example for preteens, and can be a great introduction for all readers into the fantasy genre. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to be inspired.

-Molly McNeely

“A Man Called Ove” written by Fredrik Backman, tells the story of an elderly widowed man whose suicidal attempts to join his beloved wife are continuously interrupted by life around him. Specifically by his new neighbours, a pregnant Iranian woman, her husband, and her 2 girls. Ove is introduced as a grumpy, firm man of principle, who is very concerned with maintaining his routine and making sure that others around him follow the rules. As he spends more time helping his neighbours and reluctantly accepting their love and care, he softens and begins to find a new purpose in life. He even unwillingly creates a humorous bond with a street cat who becomes his companion. This story invites us to consider the perspective of the elderly, and our time on this planet. As humans living in very busy world, we often think we’ll have time to do or say things in the future, neglecting the value and worth of the current moment. More importantly, this story shows us the true power of creating and maintaining genuine connections with those around us. Like Ove discovers in the story, our lives amount to how we make others feel after we’ve passed on and the memories we leave them with.

I recommend this book for readers who enjoy humorous, yet sentimental books (and anyone who doesn’t mind a book that makes them cry!)

Review By: Hanya Saleh

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan's novel, Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer, is a young adult fantasy story that follows the protagonist, Magnus Chase. Magnus is a 16-year-old boy who has been homeless on the streets of Boston since the death of his mother. His life changes when he discovers that he is the son of a Norse god and is suddenly thrown into a world of mythological creatures and gods. After a deadly encounter, Magnus is taken to Valhalla, where fallen warriors train for Ragnarok. The story centers around Magnus’s quest to recover the Sword of Summer, a powerful weapon that could prevent the end of the world!

This novel provides readers with a strong sense of adventure and humor while introducing Norse mythology in an engaging and accessible way. Riordan promotes themes of identity, courage, friendship, and self-acceptance throughout the book. What I like about the novel is that Magnus is not a typical hero; instead of relying solely on physical strength, he uses kindness, intelligence, and compassion to solve problems. The relationships between characters emphasize loyalty, teamwork, and acceptance, showing readers the importance of supporting one another.

What I like about Riordan’s novels is that mythology is integrated seamlessly into the modern world, allowing readers to explore ancient beliefs through a familiar contemporary lens, which might make them more inclined to read or be interested in the type of content. His use of humour provides entertainment, but also serves as a narrative tool that is used to balance darker themes such as death, loss, and destiny, making the novel accessible to a younger audience. I recommend this book for grades 4-6 during read aloud, and grade 6 for independent reading and novel study. This is also a great addition to the Percy Jackson series if students are interested in learning and reading about mythology.

- Alissa

Of Men and Men: John Steinbeck

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck takes readers to Depression-era California, where two very different friends, George and Lennie, travel from job to job in search of work and a better life. George is sharp, realistic, and protective, while Lennie is gentle, physically strong, and needs help understanding the world around him. Life on the ranches is hard and often lonely, but the two hold tightly to a shared dream of owning their own place someday. As you read, consider questions like: Why is friendship so important when life feels unfair? What happens when dreams collide with reality? Through simple yet powerful language, memorable characters, and emotional moments, Steinbeck explores friendship, hope, belonging, and the struggles of people trying to survive in an unforgiving society.

While reading Of Mice and Men, what stood out to me most was the vulnerability and humanity in George and Lennie’s friendship. In a world that is often harsh, lonely, and unforgiving, their relationship is built on compassion, patience, and empathy. George looks out for Lennie, not because he has to, but because he cares deeply about him, and Lennie’s trust in George shows how much he depends on that kindness. Their friendship highlights how meaningful human connection can be, especially when life is difficult, and it reminds the reader that compassion can exist even in the toughest circumstances.

The Magician's Elephant by Kate Damaclia is a wonderful children's novel following a young orphaned boy named Peter on his adventure to find his sister. The story begins illustrating the lonely, harsh world Peter finds himself in living with the cruel lieutenant Vilna Lutz. Here Peter is told his sweet sister Adele was not alive. However, Peter discovered his sister does still live. Adele is living at an orphanage and has been left wondering if they will ever meet again.

As the story continues on, the power of love, friendship, and the elephant's magic carries Peter to find his sister. Although this story is a novel meant for children, I believe it is an equally impactful read for adults. Themes of magic, mystery, love, and a longing to be brought back to a sense of home is something I think we can connect with as humans, regardless of our age. I would recommend reading this story because it stands as a powerful symbol of hope and although may seem simple, is a beautifully crafted book.

The story follows Billy, a resourceful boy growing up in Saskatchewan, whose life becomes delightfully chaotic after he adopts two quirky owls, Wol and Weeps. Through Billy’s adventures, Mowat captures the wonder of childhood and the deep bonds that can form between humans and animals.

From a Primary–Junior teaching perspective, this text offers rich opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Its accessible language and episodic structure make it ideal for developing reading fluency, comprehension, and prediction skills. Students can explore themes of empathy, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship as they reflect on Billy’s relationships with his animal companions and community. The Canadian setting also supports curriculum expectations around identifying local contexts in literature and recognizing diverse experiences across the country.

Additionally, Owls in the Family invites creative extension activities, such as research projects on Canadian wildlife, personal narrative writing, or discussions on responsible pet care.

Wonder tells the story of a ten-year-old boy, August “Auggie” Pullman, who has facial differences and attends school for the first time after being homeschooled for several years. As Auggie begins Grade 5, he experiences classmates staring, whispering, and bullying him because of his appearance. While some students initially keep their distance or treat him unkindly, others make an effort to get to know him and eventually become his friends. Throughout the school year, Auggie faces challenges but also experiences moments of friendship, support, and understanding. With the help of kindness and empathy from peers, teachers, and his family, he gradually gains confidence and begins to feel accepted within the school community.

Wonder is an excellent book for Primary and Junior students because it emphasizes the importance of kindness and directly addresses issues of bullying, inclusion, and empathy in an accessible and age-appropriate way. The language is clear, and the chapters are short, making the text manageable and engaging for young readers. The story is relatable to students, as it reflects real-life school experiences and social situations. Through its characters and events, the novel encourages students to reflect on their own behaviour and consider how their actions affect others.

The story of the Amulet is the final book in the trilogy "5 Children and It." The book is an incredible story of 5 children: Cyril, Anthea, Jane, Robert, "the Lamb," who travel to various places in time with a being known as a Psammead. The Psammead has an ability to grant wishes without refusal, doing so however, causes it great stress and energy. The children reconnect with the Psammead in a pet shop, but this time their reunion comes with a quest to find the missing half of a magical amulet. With half the amulet in the children's possession, it gives them the ability to time travel, which they utilize to search for the missing half. In this story, the past has an impact on the future, which means the children have to be very careful. Characters in the past interact with, and can always understand the children as if language barriers do not exist. Will they find the missing half?

This still is an amazing book for primary students due to its fantastical elements and literary features. It has relatable characters with unique personalities and connects deeply with kids who are into fantasy and mystery. There are very important themes that are alluded in the book including teamwork, problem solving, empathy, care and respect for others and creatures. Additionally, the book includes kid-friendly language and tells the story from the perspective of the children, which may make content more relatable or easier to understand for children to follow along with. Each character is incredibly different from others, giving the reader an exciting anticipation for who will be encountered next. There is some minor fantasy violence, so this would likely be more appropriate for upper-primary grades.

Bobbie Session’s The Hate U Give was a song written for the 2018 film based on the novel of the same name. The song evokes main character Starr Carter by reflecting her inner conflict, anger, and growing voice in the face of injustice. The song emphasizes the cycle of hate, systemic racism, and the pressure placed on Black people to survive in a world designed to keep them down. This closely mirrors Starr’s experiences after witnessing her friend Khalil’s murder at the hands of a white police officer. Like Starr, the lyrics convey frustration with being unheard and fear of speaking out, while also showing the importance of truth and resistance. Both the song and the novel highlight Starr’s journey from silence to courage and activism.

Travellers can only travel back or forward to moments that take place in the café, and they may only meet people who have visited the café before or will visit it in the future. The seat becomes available only once a day, and the traveller must return before the coffee gets cold. Most importantly, travellers cannot change the past or the future; instead, they gain perspective and understanding of personal conflicts.

The book is composed of four interconnected short stories, all centred around themes of love, grief, acceptance, regret, and reassurance. The first story focuses on a former couple dealing with regret and unspoken truths. The second follows a husband with Alzheimer’s and his wife. The third tells the story of two sisters, one of whom has passed away. The final story centres on a mother and her child in the future after a risky pregnancy. Although none of the travellers can change the outcome of their situations, each gains a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold is more suitable for adult readers, as the conflicts explored in each relationship touch on more mature themes. I would recommend this book for readers aged 18 and older, especially those who enjoy short, simple reads that emphasize reflection and personal growth, as well as those who are curious about the “what ifs” in life.

-Sarah

"Canyon Moon" by Harry Styles reminds me of the story of Peter and Adele in The Magicians Elephant for a variety of reasons. The energy within the song feels uplifting and hopeful standing as a symbol of Peter's hope to find his sister and not give up. Harry's lyrics include the repeated words "I'm going home", which reminds me of the longing both Adele and Peter experience as orphaned children, seeking to find each other and the feeling of "home" they give each other as the story ends.

I chose Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” as a theme song for The Giver because it describes a world full colour, emotion, and wonder. Armstrong sings about the beauty of green trees, red roses, bright days, and human connection - things that Jonas starts to discover and experience as he receives memories from the Giver. Though the song sounds peaceful and happy, it highlights what is missing from Jonas’ society where everything is the same and people do not experience colour, deep emotion, or choice. This song connects beautifully to Jonas' journey throughout the book, where he realizes the dangers of a perfectly controlled society and how wonderful the real world can be, even though it is imperfect.

“The Night We Met” by Lord Huron has similar underlying themes to "Before the Coffee Gets Cold. The song is centred on feelings of regret, closure, and longing for the past, which mirror the emotions experienced by many of the characters in the novel, as they are not attempting to change the past but instead revisit pivotal moments in their lives. The lyrics convey acceptance, loss, and the pain that comes with not being able to change the past or future, aligning closely with the reflective nature of the book. I think the song would be a good match for “Before the Coffee Gets Cold” as the lyrics and tone of the song further emphasises the sense of longing and curiosity of the past, one of the major themes in the book.

Novel Study Theme Song - Kianna Hamdan

Hello,

Today I brought in two graphic novels (manga), called My Hero Academia: Volume 1 and Volume 2. Luckily for me they also created an anime for this series and there are multiple theme songs for the show. However I chose to pick the 4th opening in the series. The title of the fourth opening is called "ODD FUTURE" by UVERworld.

This story is about a boy named Deku who is born in a world of mutant humans with powers. There exists in their society heroes and villains. Deku's dreams is to become a hero like his idol, All Might. However, Deku is a regular human being, born with no powers. He has been depressed and bullied for not having powers, yet he still has the ambition to become a hero as it is his biggest dream. All Might comes across Deku on the street saving people, and putting himself in danger while others are not. From this All Might recognizes Deku's courage and bravery, as Deku has no powers, but embodies hero qualities versus the actual real heroes in societies. Thus, All Might transfers powers to Deku.

The reason I chose the fourth opening is because of this one lyric, (translated from Japanese to English): "Once you accept that you're different from the others

a crucible of possibilities will open." I love this line because I believe we are all unique in our own ways, and I relate to this as well. As being the person who always feels like they cannot fit in into the norms of society, yet I still am open minded into what life has to offer when accepting you're different and that is okay to be different.

“Stand by Me” works as a powerful soundtrack for “Magnolia Wu Unfolds It All” because it reflects the novel’s emphasis on interdependence and belonging. The song centres on presence, reassurance, and staying connected to others during moments of uncertainty. This closely mirrors Magnolia’s experiences as she returns lost socks and gradually learns how deeply people rely on one another in ways that are not always visible. When Magnolia returns the sock to the shopkeeper who reminds her of her family’s immigrant experience, the moment becomes one of solidarity and shared understanding. It highlights how difficult it can be to build a life in a new country and how meaningful small acts of care can be within a community. Similarly, when Magnolia returns socks to neighbours who are lonely, overwhelmed, or struggling, she begins to see that she is offering more than solutions to mysteries. She is offering trust, connection, and the comfort of knowing that someone notices and cares.

The message of “Stand by Me”, that people need one another during moments of fear or vulnerability, aligns with Magnolia’s realization that helping others also helps her better understand herself. Friendship, particularly Iris’s steady support, reinforces this idea. Magnolia does not navigate her worries alone, but within a network of relationships that provide reassurance and courage. As a soundtrack, “Stand by Me” quietly reinforces the novel’s social justice message that communities thrive when people look out for one another, honour individuality, and choose to stand together. I chose the Florence and the Machine cover simply because I think it is beautiful and the book was too.

The song’s lyrics capture the imaginative and emotional world of Terabithia, a secret place Jesse and his best friend Leslie create to escape reality. Lines like “I walked across an empty land… sat by the river and it made me complete” mirror how Terabithia exists across a river in the forest and becomes a place where Jesse feels understood and whole. The lyric “This could be the end of everything” foreshadows loss, reflecting Leslie’s tragic death and Jesse’s grief, growth, and eventual acceptance.

Celaena Sardothean has been trained as an assassin since she was 8 years old, a slave in the salt mines of Endovier, and is now a champion for the entertainment of the anarchist king. “Who’s afraid of little old me?” by Taylor Swift is a wonderful example of Celaena’s inner dialogue and character. Especially the line, “so tell me everything is not about me, but what if it is?”. This lyric can be seen as a nod towards the following books in the series in which much of her past is uncovered, and her overall power is heightened. Taylor Swift also has a tone in this song that matches the overall swagger of the protagonist of Throne of Glass. They are both inherently criticized by men (both fictional and in modern patriarchal society), and I think pairing Taylor Swift with a heroine written by Sarah J. Maas is poetic in and of itself.

The lyrics about being “heroes, just for one day” capture Charlie’s brief moments of confidence and belonging, especially during the tunnel scene when he feels “infinite.” The song evokes hope, vulnerability, as well as emotional release, mirroring Charlie’s longing to feel accepted and understood. Lyrics about being yourself and not being ashamed fit Anne’s growth as she learns to value her identity and voice. Like HUNTR/X's lyrics about affirming one's true self, the misfit upside-down magician learners of Dunwiddle Academy bravely affirm their true selves and come to recognize beauty in what they and others had previously viewed as flaws. Not only the UDM students, but even a parent of one of the protagonists in this book courageously models the ethos of this K-Pop hit, as they, too, come out as magically upside-down. ~Adam

“Legends Never Die” (ft. Against the Current) best reflects Magnus Chase’s journey, highlighting themes of immortality and legacy that define his narrative. The song’s emphasis on the pursuit of greatness and leaving an enduring impact (true legends' influence echoes long after their physical presence) directly parallels Valhalla, where fallen warriors continue to live on, fight, and protect the world. Magnus’s death early in the story and his rebirth as an Einherjar closely mirror the song’s emphasis on rising again when hope seems lost. Like the song suggests, Magnus proves that heroism is not defined by avoiding failure or death, but about one’s willingness to continue to stand up when the world needs you most. Additionally, many of the lyrics mirror Magnus’s journey of self-discovery, courage, growth and sacrifice.

The lyrics “Just take my hand; … I will protect you” describe Roz, the robot, protecting her son, Brightbill, the gosling.
Five Years (David Bowie)

Paired with Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut. This song is about a boy who learns that the world will end in five years time. He looks around to see those strangers who he shares this life with, who he’s never really seen before. This is the first track of Bowie’s concept album Ziggy Stardust, which tells the tale of an alien rock star who comes to save the earth. Besides the obvious through-line of Martian invasion, Five Years is the perfect theme song for Sirens of Titan because Malachi Constant could be the song’s speaker - he learns of forces in the universe beyond human control, and lacks agency to challenge them. His journey reveals that it is those people you meet along the way that give the journey meaning (“I never thought I’d need so many people” - Five Years) more so than the journey itself. As well, both pieces stylistically are space operas. -Juliana Guzy

The lyrics of Home evoke a vivid picture of Ahmet’s character by expressing a deep longing for safety, and belonging. Lines about missing home and feeling out of place mirror his experience as a refugee that is trying to adjust to a new country and classroom. The gentle tone of the song reflects Ahmet’s quiet, observant nature, while the hopefulness in the chorus captures his resilience and determination to connect with others despite his past trauma. Listening to the song, you can almost see Ahmet sitting at the back of the class, shy but full of courage and hoping to be accepted by his peers.

In connection with The Story of the Amulet by Edith Nesbit, this song details how in life, there is a period in time for everything. In connection with the book, the period of time heavily links to the various societies that the 5 children (main characters) experience. They got to see first-hand not just history but additionally, the various different values and sets of laws/rules for each place they visited. The reader got to experience and connect the, at the time, lifestyle of modern-day London, England, with the wherever the children ended up in. Although there is change that happens in history, the book and the song allude to the idea that many hold that history repeats itself. - Jeffrey

A Wrinkle in Time is an enthralling science fiction novel by Madeleine L'Engle that follows young Meg Murry, an awkward girl who has felt isolated since her father’s disappearance a year ago. One fateful night changes everything when Meg meets three celestial beings—Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which—who reveal that her father is imprisoned across space and time on the planet Camazotz, and that Meg must rescue him. Joined by her brilliant younger brother Charles Wallace and her popular friend Calvin O’Keefe, Meg travels through a wrinkle in time to confront the evil “Dark Thing” and save her father. The “Dark Thing” has consumed multiple planets, imprisoning their inhabitants in a hive mind called IT. Relying on the power of friendship, love, and courage, Meg, Charles, and Calvin work together to defeat IT and free Mr. Murry. I especially enjoyed the story's message. My favourite part was when Meg saved her brother by using her human capacity for love, something IT could not comprehend. This novel is a captivating fantasy that highlights the importance of kindness and resilience in the face of oppression. It would be an excellent independent study novel for Grades 6+ or a read-aloud book for Grades 4-5.

- April

A Wrinkle in Time Theme: Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce

For my novel, A Wrinkle in Time, I chose "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce as a potential theme song. The song expresses the fleeting nature of time and the desire to spend every moment one can with those one loves. This encapsulates the main character, Meg’s, desire to reunite with her father and the grief she feels at not being able to see him. Further, the lyrics “I've looked around enough to know, that you're the one I want to go through time with” can connect to the journey Meg goes on through time with her brother and best friend. Overall, Croce’s song emphasizes the power love has to connect through time and space–a recurring theme throughout the novel.

- April

The lyrics focus on embracing who you are, even when others judge or treat you differently, which closely reflects Auggie’s experiences at school. Lines about being brave and not being ashamed connect to Auggie learning to face the world despite feeling different because of his facial differences. The song also captures the emotional strength it takes for Auggie to stand tall and be himself.
