Ms Kristin has created an amazing environment for her class. Her class defines order, grace, and courtesy. She has very defined curriculum areas. and it stays neat and orderly thanks to everyone who calls this class theirs. All the aspects I have learned about the prepared environment are here, including her coming in extra early to be completely prepared mentally, as well, for the day. She is calm and kind and teaches her class to be the same. Before we knew we could not have lizards in class, Kristin is the only person I trusted to keep my Crested Gecko, Hopper, to take care of in a class of 22 and growing. I love how her class runs. It is very smooth most of the time. She is clear about expectations for her staff as well. Her way of guiding her classroom has gotten her to her 11th year of teaching Montessori.

I think my favorite grace and courtesy lesson is when I was subbing in a class and we role played. The guide, Ms. Adrianna, was taking my work from me. I was super “upset”. We talked about ways to deal with this situation better, then we tried again, doing the same thing, but with a gracious solution. The students LOVED it. Then we had 2 students try, they were as dramatic and animated as we were. The best is days later, a child was reminded by another about that lesson, when they tried to sit at their friend’s work while they were in the bathroom.

These are a few of my favorite practicel life activities.
The Folding to rolling of the wash cloths is great for concentration and going through the steps to roll up or fold them, or both. The students seem to really like this one as well. At the end of the day , the assistant makes sure that some are rolled and some are folded neatly for the next day.

The rainbow is a long one but great for concentration, pincer grip and order. The assistant can help by making sure it is in good repair, the proper amount of little cotton balls are in there and making sure it doesn't turn into a game of throw them. Respect for the work is a good lesson in this case.

Squeezing water from 1 cup to the other is a popular one as well. Most children I've seen doing this, love it, but the new 3 yr olds can find it fun to squirt water all over. This is where the tone keeper comes in to help that child work with this material properly.

I am unable to post a video. I do not know what I am doing wrong, but I did give my son a 3 period lesson on pretend sand paper letters, at home, as we both had school and my school is pretty far from his. Our schedules did not leave room for him to come here and do it.
My thought about Practical Life is that it is a continual thing. It is so important in the beginning, but it is also important to go back to when they have moved on to harder work. Sometimes I see students in the primary rooms go back to it when they want to do something a little bit east, but still fun. It's a great review on order and concentration. PL is necessary and important at all stages of 3-6.

Although I am not in a classroom, I have been for most of my career with children. That being said, I felt like in order to effectively be able be an administrator, I needed to know the Montessori way of learning. I need to know some history and the "why's" of the method. When giving a tour, or talking to current families, I can say I know answers to most of the questions that they have about Montessori learning. I can tell them WHY our classes are so peaceful and the children are respectful and kind. I can tell them why the students leave here ahead of peers if they choose public school after their time here. I learned so much through this course. Thank you!
