These assistive technologies can be soft, hard, high or low technology. Hard technology may include an AAC device, hearing aid, or mobility device. This order is significant since this model is based initially on the activity.  It then considers the client’s characteristics, and finally, the environment which can alter the client’s performance. Although flashy and high tech may seem the best option for a client, it may not be the most efficient nor effective method of aiding one in completing an activity if he or she is unable to utilize it.  Client factors such as cognitive and physical abilities must be put into consideration when selecting an AT. If a client had such disabilities, it may affect his or her competence in using the AT. Cook and Polgar (2015) describe various types of competence such as operational, social, and linguistic that are related to the usage of AT.  Operational competence is defined as the client’s ability to utilize AT for its intended purpose. Strategic competence is a component of soft technologies in which it can also aid the client in using the AT. These are not found in the manual but rather from experience such as trying to get over a curb while using a manual wheelchair.
