The communists are trying to overtake South Vietnam and bombing and prices are starting to get normal to them. Since that's where she lives, she and her family have to flee the country in order to be safe.

With the help of Uncle Son, the fathers best friend from navy training, they were able to get onto a Navy Ship to escape. The ship was very uncomfortable as there was little room for families with starving and foul smelling. As the ship was taking off, people had to stay in the bottom deck in darkness so that they wouldn't be caught escaping by communists as the bombs went on in the country. News was heard the Saigon was gone. The ship broke down and was running on one engine and food was scarce.

They lured the ship to a nearby island called Guam. In Guam, the refugees settled into tents while learning English, watching movies, and exploring the island. Every family must choose where they want to go so Ha’s family decided to be flown over to America.

After hours of waiting, a cowboy came to the rescue and sponsored their family to go to Alabama.

Their life was getting better and Ha got enrolled into school. Mother got a job at a sewing factory, Brother Quong got a job at a mechanics store, Ha got enrolled to school, while the other two brothers haven't gotten into school yet. They adapted the local culture and were trying their best to learn English. Their family has also resettled into their own two bedroom home near the cowboys home. Ha was bullied for being different in school and she was able to confront to bullies. So far, everything was going well for the family.

She grew up with her single mother, and three brothers. Her mother adores her while her three brothers abuse her constantly. Brother Quang is the oldest brother who favors politics and is smart. Brother Vu is the second oldest and wants to become Bruce Lee. Brother Khoi is the youngest brother who is very close with Ha and loves animals.   Her father was a naval officer who was captured in war when Ha was about 1 year old. Her family is very poor and has to work very hard in order to eat in the hot and humid place, Saigon. Ha admires papaya very much as she grew a tree in Saigon which represents having a better life and growing.
