School Counselor Competency Assessment Refelction

After reviewing the school counselor competency assessment, I was shocked to see how vast the job duties are. As a little one, I assumed school counselors just hung out in their offices and talked to kids going through turmoil. I had no idea that the school counselor plays a pivotal role in a student's support system.
After reviewing the assessment, I noticed areas I could improve upon. Like most people in the helping profession, I consider myself a fixer, and I love that about myself. The only downside to being a fixer is that I sometimes lack self-advocacy and secure boundaries (I have gotten a lot better, but I still need some improvement). The helping profession has strict and understandable rules about only acting within your scope of practice, and knowing that, as someone who will want to help others in any way I can, is a tough pill to swallow. The competency assessment mentions informing students of the limitations of school counseling and what should be done regarding referrals, but denying someone my help is difficult for me to imagine. Even if, in the grand scheme of things, I am still helping them by reminding them of their rights or referring them to someone else.

I have taken IATs in the past, and yet again, I am interested to see biases that I would never have guessed. The one that surprised me the most was the test on Disability. According to my IAT results, I have a strong automatic preference for non-disabled people. This result threw me for a loop, making me want to reflect on my values and see what could have caused that result. I enjoy taking these tests, but sometimes you don’t learn great things about yourself. One result that did not surprise me was my slight preference for you people over older adults. Through my years of working in customer service, I have found that older people are (usually) very rude and feel entitled to respect even though they aren’t willing to give any. I can see the bias in my words, which makes me feel bad because I know not all older people are rude, but my negative experiences have caused me to generalize my emotions. I try to fight this bias by reminding myself that everyone is different and generally deserves a chance.

Dr. Margaret Mwenje and Lucy Gachenia, Ph.D. students, begin their work with data showcasing the benefits of comprehensive school counseling programs among schools in the United States. Those studies showed that the "…implementation of the counseling program resulted in ample gains." (Gachenia & Mwenje, 2020, p. 59). The authors go on to see if school counseling programs have the same effect on young adolescents in Kiambu County, Kenya.

This journal mentions that school counselors and teachers would be wise to team up, and I concur. As a counselor, you are part of a treatment team, and in the school setting, teachers spend more time with students than a counselor, so clear communication with teachers is vital. The writing states that a benefit of counseling in school systems is helping a student build a positive "self-concept." Self-concept refers to how a person feels about themselves and how others may or may not think about said person.

In the end, the research showed that students who attended schools with solid school counseling programs performed better academically and developed skills that could be used throughout their lives.
