For example, a person with depression or anxiety may find it difficult to follow through with household tasks, have limited emotional availability, struggle to maintain employment, and lack the desire to socialize. 2, is intimacy issues. People with performance anxiety and low self-esteem may distance themselves from intimate parts of their relationship. And 3, the risk of co-dependent behaviors. The partner of a person with mental illness may start to derive their self-worth from the degree to which they are “needed” or how much they are able to “take care of” their loved one.
Source 3- (Mental Illness Affects the Whole Family | Pine Rest Blog)
When mental illness enters a family, it can take a huge toll on everyone. Some of the main issues families face are the mentally ill one/ones often become the primary focus of the family, leading to others maybe feeling less important and neglected because all the attention is on that one person. Also, family members have different perceptions of the problem and have conflicts about the solutions. This can cause many fights and trust issues in the family. Feelings of helplessness, frustration, loss, guilt and compassion fatigue are also very common problems.
Source 4- (Mental illness - family and friends - Better Health Channel)
People try to blame the cause of someone's mental illness on one person or thing, but in reality, no one is to blame when a person is affected by mental illness. It is not uncommon for family and friends to focus a large portion of their attention and energy on their loved one. However, it is important to look after yourself too.
Source 5- (Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Self-Esteem (verywellmind.com)) People with anxiety especially, have self-esteem/self-image issues. The problem for most people is that they struggle to see the amount of acceptance and rejection in their lives leading them to have low self-esteem when in reality they are very much loved and appreciated. This can be magnified for people with anxiety problems related to other people, aka generalized anxiety disorder.

How has online school/covid affected the mental health of students? - Lezly Lopez

Source 1-(https://highfocuscenters.pyramidhealthcarepa.com/the-effects-of-online-learning-on-a-teens-mental-health/) Covid-19 has altered the lives of many students and their mental health. With the decrease of social interactions, some might develop anxieties on going out. Maintaining friendships is also something important to many students, which can be hard to do with restrictions. Balancing school and your social life is hard, you can't prioritize one without it affecting your mental health. Actually having motivation for school is also hard.
Source 2- (https://www.jmir.org/2020/9/e21279/) Many students have increased anxiety levels due to the pandemic. They have to worry about their loved ones safety, their academics, and themselves. Having online school added to their personal life's worries makes stress increase which affects their motivation for school. it seems school work has increased as well, solely to prove you were there. Being at home all day and having to stare at a screen for 5 hours plus the time you take to do homework, is exhausting.
Source 3-(https://www.epi.org/publication/the-consequences-of-the-covid-19-pandemic-for-education-performance-and-equity-in-the-united-states-what-can-we-learn-from-pre-pandemic-research-to-inform-relief-recovery-and-rebuilding/) online school has affected the growth of students, academically wise. What should be done is making students take tests to see where they are at and assist them. It's difficult to adjust to online school because the school system was not prepared for something like this. School is about interacting and absorbing information hands on, which is not easy online. Once the pandemic is over we will need to make up for it by offering more tutoring opportunities.
Source 4-(https://districtadministration.com/online-distance-learning-affects-parent-mental-health-stress/) Online school has also affected parents. With some children falling behind, parents find themselves worrying for their child. With online schooling, parents have become teachers. Instead of opening schools again, schools should work on supporting parents to reduce stress.
Source 5-(https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/survey-teachers-and-students-are-struggling-with-online-learning/2020/11) Teachers may find teaching during this time difficult. With more students skipping class and not doing assignments, it's difficult to reach students. Teachers have reported that students are less prepared for school compared to last year. It can also be hard to help students when some of them might not have the resources they need. Students are falling behind which can affect their mental health and confidence in themselves.

What aspects of cancel culture need to be kept, and what needs to be changed?- Kelly Westholm

Source 1 (https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/UHLPSW240013521/OVIC?u=azstatelibdev&sid=OVIC&xid=af4426ab): This is the topic overview for cancel culture provided by the Gale Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection, and is entirely unbiased. The document's purpose is strictly informative, providing its readers with an explanation of what cancel culture is, the history behind cancel culture, and what the opposing viewpoints of cancel culture stand for. The added sidebars are what I found to be particularly helpful. I learned a lot from the main articles, yes, but I still had a hard time forming my own personal opinion. That was before I decided to read the sidebars, the first of which provided a balanced list of the pros and cons of cancel culture. The second sidebar keeps the promise of its "Critical Thinking Questions" title, providing non-leading questions for readers to form, reform, or solidify their positions.

Source 2 (https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/UHWHGH329441172/OVIC?u=azstatelibdev&sid=OVIC&xid=6e3ade07): The author of this essay, Thomas Ullman, argues against cancel culture. He acknowledges that there are some famous and historical works that consist of controversial and even offensive topics, then goes on to argue that those works should not be condemned by their content alone. Rather, they should be evaluated by the historical impact they had on future authors despite the content that would nowadays be criticized and censored. From this article, I learned that cancel culture affects more than just modern celebrities and political figures; it affects the works of historical authors, playwrights, poets, and philosophers.

Source 3 (https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A630110523/OVIC?u=azstatelibdev&sid=OVIC&xid=cd3a79d5): In this news article from The Washington Post, author and columnist David Von Drehle argues for cancel culture, as opposed to the previous source. While still acknowledging that cancel culture has negatively impacted various people of influence, David states that cancel culture can serve as a healthy challenge for writers and public figures to open up to the affected public's disagreement. His overall claim is that we shouldn't let cancel culture divide us in our different viewpoints, but help us learn from them. To challenge the assumptions of others while still allowing ourselves to understand where they come from. This article helped me do just that, in fact, adding to my existing list of the pros and cons of cancel culture. It also, not unlike the previous source, helped to inform me of the broad spectrum of those who can be affected by cancel culture.

A few examples are emotional distress, death and sterility.
Source 2-
(https://go-gale-com.lapr1.idm.oclc.org/ps/retrieve.do?tabID=Viewpoints&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&searchResultsType=MultiTab&hitCount=67&searchType=BasicSearchForm&currentPosition=1&docId=GALE%7CEJ3010869203&docType=Viewpoint+essay&sort=Relevance&contentSegment=ZXAY-MOD1&prodId=OVIC&pageNum=1&contentSet=GALE%7CEJ3010869203&searchId=R1&userGroupName=azstatelibdev&inPS=true) many states have different requirements and laws about abortion. for example 4 different states require parent notification and consent in order for a minor to get an abortion. States like Florida are hostile which don't allow abortions at all. but there is also states that just require your private insurance that covers it or just paying for it all.
Source 3- ( https://go-gale-com.lapr1.idm.oclc.org/ps/retrieve.do?tabID=Viewpoints&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&searchResultsType=MultiTab&hitCount=801&searchType=BasicSearchForm&currentPosition=3&docId=GALE%7CEJ3010102285&docType=Viewpoint+essay&sort=Relevance&contentSegment=ZXAY-MOD1&prodId=OVIC&pageNum=1&contentSet=GALE%7CEJ3010102285&searchId=R5&userGroupName=azstatelibdev&inPS=true) when women get the abortion the number of them having some sort of emotional trauma has increased over time. women feel heart broken and morally disturbed. many even end up taking their own lives due to the amount of times theyve had abortions. women who had one 72% of them had an increasing rate of psychiatric admission than the ones that did have their child.
Kathia Ochoa
